The original company had various secondhand locos from the LBSCR, LSWR and GWR. By the post WW2 period, hire-in’s of Terriers and SECR 01’s were common.

For many years the axle loading on the preserved line prevented any large locos from running on it - and even in BR days tender locos never worked south of Rolvenden.

I agree that a pacific on the line is not going to be authentic, but as a former volunteer there I think it’s fantastic.

    Well, no actually.

In Southern days, nobody would have been fooled at either Headcorn or Robertsbridge when they they had to change from a Southern train to a KESR one, and nobody joining a train at any station between the two (including Tenterden) would have mistaken anything provided by the Colonel (or Mr Austen, for that matter) as being anything to do with Sir Herbert Walker's magnificent efforts.

You are, once again, speaking out of an orifice in your body not normally associated with verbal communication.

I won’t like this post, but do sort of agree with it, there’s only so many times you can tell some people about some things.

Let's face it, their is high degree of nostalgia amongst enthusiasts for the rustic KESR but in reality it would have been a complete toilet of a railway and despised by those with no choice other than use it.

By the 1930’s, most passengers would have been carried on one of the ‘railcars’, which were very successful at driving away most of the few remaining passengers! Anyone who has ever travelled on ‘The Goose’ at Statfold will know what it must have been like

Your use of "toilet" puts me in mind of the Gents at Bodiam, which, as legend has it, was flushed from the rainwater downpipe. Bet that was an experience in the summer

I know they’ve got much better facilities now but is the ancient urinal on the platform at Tenterden Town still in use? It’s a while since I’ve ‘been’.

It is locked these days. It was fairly grim at the best of times and had no hand washing facility. Like other stations on the line, in its original form, flushing was via rain down the drain pipe

Off theme but I must mention that the so called ‘Steam up’ at the end of May is no such thing as it involves at least one diesel according to the K&ESRly web site.

You've 1) just drawn my attention to this event and it looks brilliant and 2) made me more interested in going by mentioning it's steam AND diesel! Was going to see the Bulleid on the 1940s weekend and combine that trip with the RHDR gala but now thinking this event is the better choice for a KESR visit as the 33 is out too and I'll go to one of the RHDR's autumn events instead.

There is nothing in the description of this event that says it is steam only.
I doubt that 99.9% of people will care if there is the odd diesel around.

And if they are running an intensive timetable, there might not be sufficient working steam locos, and it might not be cost effective to hire another just for the event.

Poor little Marcia, she's going to be petrified, she's going to be looking back over her shoulder to see this flipping big brute glaring at her, snorting, get a move on or get out of my way little engine. :) i'm going to open my smoke box, and gobble you up,

Public conveniences were not exactly convenient back then, Some even had no roofs, I can remember having to spend a penny at Rothley many years back, and think it might have been open to the elements, just side walls,

I didn’t say I objected. Having stirred you all up I will now retire to my corner. I will of course be going to the event having lived within a few minutes if the line for many years until 2009 there is no way I could miss a return visit.

Not much different to Stepney piloting the 9F on the Bluebell which I have pictures of somewhere.
