I think the shareholders have expected that reality. Wasn’t that long ago we had a couple of them having letters published in Steam Railway along the lines of “we haven’t been contacted but would give up our shares if meant 25 had a chance to be restored”.

Well I know what I would like to see done, gift the engine to the MNLPS it can remain at Selinge whilst the new owners get new members and raise funds to start on the mechanical overhaul send the boiler to Crewe to be overhauled if they can get enough new members to work on 25 and not impact on their requirements for 28 some people prefer to work on restoring a loco than on the mainline work. and that way, if 35025 were to be restored before 35028 comes out for overhaul, then 35025 can canny on from where her sister leaves off, that could then free up people who worked on 35025 to strip 28 or allows her a short program of preserved line visits to earn more funding towards her overhaul.

I think the mnlps (or members thereof) have stated previously that they have enough on their plate keeping 35028 running. I seem to recall a public appeal for cash at the last overhaul, even though the loco has a lot of well paying mainline work. I don't think they would thank you for massively increasing their cash requirements.

Also, Crewe don't do boiler overhauls for outside bodies anymore.

And HBSS is moving to a new premises where it will have more space to take on work, and possibly new staff at some point I would guess.

Actually didn't Greg Wilson offer to overhaul 25 but was turned down?

I did say, that the MNLPS should at the same time seek to attract new members, Some people actually prefer to do the restoration work than on maintaining Clan Line, more members should equal more cash flow, people who may not want to help towards 35028, might actually think I want to support 35025, and of course, as the A1 trust show, when you have a good set up, and a well known reputation that can also attract additional help.

Sadly, it sounds like 25 is "owned" by the same kind of realist that owns the Binbrook Crab....

Just to resurrect this thread, 35025 is now owned by Southern Steam Locomotives Ltd (The owner and other shareholders receiving SLL shares) and they are doing a lot of work on the chassis at Sellinge. A new cab is being made at Herston and the boiler is still in reasonable condition.
But what of "Shaw Savill".....is their any more up to date news?

Riley's posted photos of the refurbished bogie wheels a couple of years back. Don't think there's been anything since then.

While I appreciate that he has three Black Fives to look after, along with the contract overhaul business, not to mention being responsible for a certain green Pacific that turns 100 this year, 35009 would be a very useful and welcome addition to the main line fleet. If it was registered with DBS as well as WCRC (as I think at least two of the "Fives" are) it would be the ideal stand-in for Clan Line on the Pullmans and also would not be going to Fort William so therefore would be more readily available if there was a sudden shortage of engines in the south due to failures. Sometimes 44871 or 45407 have run huge mileages with just a support coach to step in at short notice when a loco has become unavailable. Furthermore, a Merchant Navy maintained to the same high standards to which we have become accustomed with 44871, 45212 and 45407 would be an exciting loco to travel behind in its own right besides being the ideal "Thunderbird", especially given the willingness of Ian Riley to send his locos further afield more frequently than the Carnforth pool.

Still, patience is the name of the game for now.

Yeah, all of that. The impression I get (based on the facebook page, I have no inside knowledge) is that they're doing it when machines and manpower are free between contract jobs, so it's a bit of a slow burner. Big MN fan so I'd love to see 35009 out and about but I suspect the jobs that pay the bills have to take priority.

I was speaking to someone who is very much involved in a mainline orientated business last weekend, and he was expressing the thinking that with Clan Line and BIL, there wasn't the work for a third Merchant at present. This meant that the overhaul costs couldn't be justified, so the engine he is involved with would likely remain dormant. Overhauling to main line standard is a lot of cost, irrespective of whether you can do the work at your own premises, and if the work isn't there afterwards, it doesn't make sense in the current climate.

so by process of elimination I guess we won't be seeing 35027 for a while, then.

I'm not so sure. At the moment, other than four locos that are solely LSL operated, the only air braked class 7/8 that is potentially available at present is 60103. Even non-air braked there's only a couple of Castles that don't venture far from home, and 46115. An air-braked, go anywhere class 8 could potentially be very useful.

You talk as if these locos will be common users. Unfortunately the way the main line operations are developing locos tend to only work with their owning TOC, so for example you are highly unlikely to see 46100 and 46115 doubleheading any time soon.

There is an unfortunate coincidence with both Tornado and Clan Line being out of action for much longer than expected. Having GBXV setting off for Plymouth behind a Class 5 is clearly non-optimal. Once Tornado and Clan Line are back, plus DoG as well, the potential work for any additional large loco with air braking would indeed be very limited.

I suppose a lot would depend on the market that Ian Riley is in, at the moment his 5's are suitable for much of the work that comes his way, so he does not need to finish 35009 , but if his 5's start to become overloaded or become harder to path, on NR, then 35009 might become more desirable, being a class 8, and having a higher top speed, and higher water capacity , makes an engine easier to path, and of course an MN can haul more than an black 5, fine engines though they are,

I note that you are completely ignoring the fact that LSL have two Merchant Navies that they're not working on yet, either. If anyone has the resources, they do - why not try badgering them instead? Oh, they're too busy with other things, are they, however much they want to? Well perhaps Ian Riley is too!
