I saw this too and it wasn't pretty. Older men wanting the railway for themselves because they were trying to video without background noise. On a more positive note for the SVR, it's pleasing to see how busy the Friday of a spring steam gala has become.

The combination of very young children with old males doesn't make for the best onboard or platform experience but in my view that's tough. It's all money that the SVR needs.

I thought that the SVR handled the day well given the complexity of what they were doing especially with overcrowded shuttle/local trains trying to fit in with the through services. And then there was the 'pull' of Pendennis. I was on the 10:10 ex Bridgnorth that was comfortably full and ran nicely down to Bewdley on its non stop run.

As for the timetable, before going I sat down with what was public to work out exactly what was going on with the extended timings and picked up the much earlier arrival slots at Bewdley, for example. For the life of me I don't know why the WTT wasn't shared so that those who wanted, for example to travel behind every loco, could plan properly. For example it was obvious that you don't need 90+ minutes to run the length of the line and even though the 13:10 ex Bridgnorth departed 20 late we still had to wait time at Bewdley and were more or less to time at Kidderminster.

Can I mention, finally, that I really feel for the issues that the railway has experienced around MP 147 that have now moved on to the area of MP 144.5. When 5 mph limits really do mean 5 mph you know that it's serious. And on a less serious point, clearly the paint gang don't treat Taw Valley in the manner that they might view a GWR loco. Given it's various colour and design appearances perhaps it should be called Rainbow Valley or maybe Happy Valley....

Any news on 4555? It and the goods were hauled by a diesel into Bridgnorth last night.

It's in service. It was double headed due to operational reasons according to a volunteer online

there’s some news in the latest newsletters at Alveley. One of the two areas of concern has had some stabilisation work by Geobear using (from memory) polymer injection, which seems to have worked and the speed limit is being increased. The other has had the ‘big dip’ attended to and the limit will increase from 5mph, but it requires some traffic over it and do fettling for that to happen. The latter is not a permanent solution.

I hear too the Railway has been getting more advice on how to make Sterns less bad without spending the zillions that would be needed for a permanent solution

Is the restriction on the Highley loop recent, as many years ago I went through the loop on a train heading North that was pathed to cross another there

It's always been that way, the only time I knew it different was when Highley was closed many years ago (possibly when the engine house was built) when the loop was clipped on a temporary basis for services to work through it. Perhaps your memory is playing tricks as it's never been signalled for passenger workings through the loop?

At may age always possible. I seem to remember it was a year City of Truro was there and we had to stand all the way from Kiddy to Bridgnorth, much to (my now) wife's displeasure.

I have never known a passenger service use the loop there in my 30 years going to the SVR, but never say never!

Possibly when the footbridge was under construction?

Great day at the gala today. Good weather throughout and a very good attendance from what I could see. Really hope the railway makes a good profit from it. A couple of firsts for me in that I had never seen Hagley Hall or Pendennis Castle in action before. Both were excellent. Then there was my old friend 4555 that I remember from my childhood holidays in Devon in the 1970s. I've been rather fond of that loco ever since but haven't seen it too much in recent times as it doesn't seem to travel too much. Good to see Erlestoke Manor back in action too.

So what's not to like? Taw Valley of course! Sorry folks but it doesn't rock my boat - maybe slightly better than purple but not much!

Seriously though - many thanks to all at the Severn Valley for putting on a great show. Long may they continue to do so!

Way before then I was thinking of, probably late 80's, so maybe my memory is wrong.

What security issues are there, especially if you only use it for reference? FB is a great resource for information, if you don’t use it you lose out

I’m afraid this sort of thing it’s common among vidiots, to distinguish them from the normal video filmers. If you want a recording without background noise don’t go to stations. I would have thought that the human noise element was all part of the atmosphere.

I believe the loop and sidings at ‘ighley are very much wanted by those that like to Yellow Pen such things in their Bakers atlas.
There are some rare sidings and loops I’ve done at the the SVR including both loops at Kiddy and both the sidings at Arley, but I’ve always known the loop at Highley to out of bounds for passing movements.
As an aside though I will say I suffered my first hangover after enjoying the hospitality of a friend who was lodging at the Station in the late 1990’s, that phrase ‘never again’ has turned out to be one of the biggest lies of my life! :)

I think the reason is the loop is signalled by ground discs and passenger trains are not permitted to be signalled by shunt signals and I don’t think the siding turnout has a facing point lock. Perhaps a signalman can confirm if that’s correct.
