Hi All

Anyone have an idea what all this was about, a photo of Black 5 45207 taken at Lancaster by Bill Wright (who has given permission for me to use his photos) on the 5th August 1967 nearly 20 years after nationalisation

There were a few locos turned out in the mid- to late-'sixties with pre-nationalisation markings, and sometimes numbers, applied, Crab 2942 of Birkenhead was certainly one of them. Enthusiasts not only cleaned engines (perhaps not in this case) but also made their preferrences known.

Makes an interesting comparison to forty years later, when the trend is to turn out everything in BR liveries!

Interesting shot Neil ! I love to see anything from the Lancaster area from the days when I was a teenage spotter *blush*. I must have been around the station on that date but don't recall any gossip about it.

Crab (4)2942 - was in fact the product of a very enthusistic cleaning prior to use on a special by members of LUPTS whilst on Birkenhead Mollington Street depot, They polished the tender so intensely that the letters L M S were clearly visible in addition to the later BR steam logo...!- ie they removed layers of paint with the polish !!!!

Being a regular linesider at the time, I actually did see that 5 at around that time (No 45209 of 10A and not 45207 as Mr DIMmer has stated), but I had all but forgotten about it until this picture appeared. You see, similar things happened all the time, particularly on those engines unfortunate enough to go through Crewe Works to receive the latter coating of un-lined 'tar' and which soon came to be a magnet for everything that emanated from the chimney and elsewhere.

It must be emphasised that, in this instance, neither of the regular North West enthusiast cleaning gangs in the locality were responsible ... the 'artistry', presumably, having been merely the efforts of someone on the staff playing silly buggars at Carnforth shed. Indeed, these particular markings had been merely very amateurishly applied using nothing more than sticks of chalk ... and they obviously didn't last for very long before being washed away by the weather.

Chalk, by now being freely issued at depots to be used as a substitute for proper reporting number boards, usually by those too lazy to go and find one, some wag at Carnforth depot (who was presumably being paid at the time to do something else entirely), must have decided to make a personal statement ... rather than to occupy his working hours more constructively!

I might add that, it remains my view (as one who HAS properly cleaned many engines at 10A, albeit usually clandestinely!), that any paid "cleaners" that 10A did possess, certainly never found much time to clean their allocation properly (if at all) during the final years of steam, but that, to be fair, was par-for-the-course everywhere by the time that this picture had been taken.

Now, we DID have an 8F at Lostock Hall replete with a lined-out tender and one of the cabsides of that loco did then soon appear with full LNWR lining .... but that's quite another story! We also had a further 8F with a Brunswick Green lined-out tender but, sensibly, that one was left quite alone!!

I am certain that the BR Green lined tenders both Fowler 3500 and Stanier 4000 will have come from Jubilees - some Jubilees swapped their Fowler tenders for Stanier 4000's from 8F's.
Not sure about the lined black - maybe the tender came from a mixed traffic Black 5 ?

Guilty!!!
A group of us had spent the previous night on Huddersfield station photographing the numerous trains that passed during the night.
There were oil trains, newspaper trains, parcel trains and the odd passenger train.
The Black 5 spent an hour or so in the very early hours of Saturday morning in the bay platform on the Manchester side of the station. During a lull in activity we set to work with some chalk and that was the result.

These impromptu events used to happen well before 1968 too. I can remember an 'Austerity' at the site of Ordsell Lane in around 1963 with the name 'Duane Eddy' chalked on the smokbox!

Archive footage shows one of the Black Fives working on the last day of the GCR in 1966 had "Great Central" chalked on the tender either side of the Lion emblem where "British Railways" should of been.
