That's a timely reminder of why a support coach is really useful on all loco movements including LE moves. Aside from the all-useful refreshment there is also the supply of tools and oils etc for those 'just-in-case' moments.

Trust me Alan, it was no big deal not having a support coach for the move on Monday. Locos have always carried basic tools and oil for top up purposes and that is all you really need. I think it fair to say that the job ran without a hitch. Here it is pausing briefly at a soggy Arrochar and Tarbet for a cross with the morning Mallaig to Glasgow sprinter. IMG_7980 copy.jpg

Only two water stops? Used to think there were four on a typical Carnforth-Fort William positioning move.

Exactly. Carnforth to FW is a well-proven route and access for a road support vehicle is pretty good, as the railway is never far from a road and, through the wonders of modern technology, they can follow progress and keep in touch.

A lack of tea-making is probably the major downside.

Slight difference in water consumption for a light engine compared to loco and stock.

Indeed, while I did not check the guage myself I understand that there was nearly 2000 gals left on arrival at the Fort, having left Graigendoran a 100 miles away with a full (4000gals) tank.
