Have done that with both 85 and 261. The thrash is well worth experiencing.

I have done steam out of Cork once, with 85 on 7-9-2003, but I'm sad to say I no longer remember it. Somewhere I have read a stirring account of a climb out of Cork with Maeḋḃ: anyone remember where that account is?

With the demise of the International tours, this would seem to be the only way to see a fair chunk of Ireland behind steam in one go.

Not a permanent demise; rather a hiatus caused by the actual sad demise of Noel Playfair: see https://www.steamtrainsireland.com/news/121/northern-operations

He drove 85 from Whitehead to Dundalk on my 2015 trip. Gave us an astonishing climb over the mountains south of Newry. Had a chat to him after that and found him to be a thoroughly nice chap. A sad loss to the Irish steam scene.
