When most of us want to run unprototypical stock we just do it on our ‘00’ layouts ;)

For me it was that deep-throated noise when they accelerated away from a stop. What you describe is a sight and sound from my teenage years that I greatly miss these days :(

During the second Deltic age (when 22 worked for Virgin) I went down to Plymouth with it, paid £30 to stand in a vestibule all the way there and back and all at the grand old age of 15!
Whilst stood on the concourse at New Street looking for my train home to Sandwell and Dudley I could hear the noise and feel the concourse throb beneath me.
    Happy days :):)

To be honest they are driven very softly now, the days just before withdrawal regularly saw, the stick taken to the stop when the stock was barely moving, running the risk of a overload, wheel slip, or generator damage. That is how I remember them

their was one that was wound up to 2000 hp per engine as opposed to 1650 and clocked at ludicrous speeds, it’s number escapes me.

Can someone explain in simple terms why using a pair of deltic engines was necessary to achieve a higher power-to-weight ratio than those of contemporary diesel locomotives, but modern locomotives with more conventionally laid-out engines have power-to-weight ratios considerably higher still?

Surely it's simply a classic case of development over time. Just with petrol engines in cars or diesel engines in trucks, slow but steady improvement together with more sophisticated materials allows progressively more power per cc or per cylinder.

Exactly this. Going automotive for a moment, let's compare two cars c. 35 years apart. Both have 3.0 litre engines, so:

From 1966, the Mk. IV Ford Zodiac with 2994cc V6: 138bhp.
    From 2000, the E39 BMW 530i with 2979cc inline 6: 231bhp.

In the 90s some BMWs were packing 100bhp/litre (the 'M' cars)

We visited Kenilworth Castle on the way back from the fantastic G&W weekend, in the Armstrong Siddeley exhibition there are the old adverts for the cars - 5 litre engine delivering 30 hp!!

I think you may be confusing the actual power output with the Fiscal (RAC) Rating, used to calculate taxation. That was a formula based on cylinder diameter, hence the prevalence of long-stroke engines.

Good example: Citroen 2CV produced 12bhp from its original 425cc engine but attracted a 2HP Fiscal rating - hence Deux Cheveaux ("two horses")

This is a useful guide: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_horsepower

For some years, the model numbers of Wolseley cars were derived from the fiscal and actual rating, e.g. 15/50.

The Ramsgates were good fun, nice bit of rail tour feel to them too with a different route there and back!
