Unless the problem is the fault of the railway then the problem is entirely down to the loco owner. In this particular case it was a known weakness of the loco and, as said by others, a planned replacement was on the cards. Although this isn't universal, hire agreements usually provide for a given mileage based on a loco's availability so, if it isn't available, there is no liability to pay for that mileage. There are also various other variables such as who is responsible for running maintenance, boiler washouts, etc. I've never known an agreement which requires the provision of a replacement loco.

I guess the next question will be whether the NYMR will need another hire loco to get it through this summer, at least. I imagine that they'll want to get by with what they've got but I think it will be tight.

Come summer it will be all diesel as normal due to fire risk so I don’t think they will miss it really

    Given they have 92134, 926, 825, 65894, 5428, 80136, 76079 and 29 with the 31, 25 and 37. I doubt a spare loco is needed

I believe 76079 has been withdrawn from traffic due to boiler problems. The J27 was due to visit the KESR last year but this was postponed to 2023 I don't know if it is still planned. 29 is generally not used on peak services presumably the loads are considered a bit much for her on a regular basis.

I'm not sure how much use 80136 will see, either, due to its axle crack. On the plus side, there's 44806 due back at some point but whether t will make it for the peak season is a moot point. It would only take one more loco to fall by the wayside for things to start looking grim.

The NYMR started the season in the knowledge that 76079 was a loco of last resort due to ongoing problems with leaking tubes and it only managed a few days in traffic. 825, 926 and 80136 have all suffered from unforeseen problems but should take their share of services this year. 5428 is currently awaiting paperwork to enable it to run over the network. I think 44806 is still some way off as its boiler has yet to be reunited with its frames.
Of the diesels the Cl.25,Cl.31, Ck.37 and Cl.47 are all currently available.
    Tomorrow’s locos should be 926, 65894, 92134 and D7628.

I had wondered why 825, 80136 and 76079 wasn't rostered for a while. Any idea as to what is wrong with the S15?

It has a crack in the smokebox tube plate. Unusually, not between the tubes. It’s requiring everything removing to gain access for repairs.

If it is at New Bridge, how would a train and car collide when its a gated crossing? Isn't there an open crossing nearer Pickering?

It is at New Bridge but it is the adjacent occupation crossing and not the road crossing. However, it is gated and the gates were closed. It would seem that the woman drove through the gates and into the train. More than that, I don't think it would be right to say. The woman was seriously injured and I can only hope that she makes a full recovery.

Based on that statement if the RAIB say not the railway's fault she has driven through a gate, does it get passed to the police or are they conducting a separate investigation in parallel?

Any investigation carried out by RAIB will be entirely independent of the police, and vice-versa.
