Here is Hardwicke and Flying Scotsman departing Hellifield on 1st May 1976, the day od the S&C Centenary. As I recall the Centenary special and display at Settle station should have involved a Black 5 and the Midland Compound but both failed the week before and these two from the Midland's rivals were turned out instead. 76-5-1 11 790+ 4472 Hellifield copy.jpg

Not quite sure how we have got on to this on the RTC thread as these events preceed Nigel Dobbin's railtours by a couple of decades or so, but its nice to revive old memories.

Looking forward to tomorrow's trip to Edinburgh, but not alas with Hardwicke, or the A3.

    Peter

One assumes that it was a problem en route or it wouldn't have left 10A. Rather a mystery, that one.

From 50 seconds in you can hear them. If it isn't the wheel flats then the motion doesn't sound too healthy.

We seemed to be the only people on platform 10 to welcome the Scot into York last night. WCR did an amazing job to pull that one out of the bag and thanks to the crew and everyone else for rescuing the situation for us travellers. Neil

That's because those lads don't do problems, they do solutions.
No point in crying over spilt milk, just get on with the job at hand.
Well done to everyone involved who pulled that out of the bag like that, hard work and a cracking job, how it should be

46115 passing through Acklington 3 and a half minutes early, less than five seconds before the southbound Azuma, which was just about on time, came through and hid the coaches. A close call! If I'd been further down the platform I'd have been bowled by the Azuma.

And a second shot 59 Minutes later at Rock, a bit further north of the looping stop at Wooden Gate. Can't get bowled there, but the sun was at an impossible angle.

A close call at Acklington, where Scots Guardsman was three minutes early, but an Azuma was on time to almost make a mess of things.

Work still continues on the Royal Border Bridge so looking to hide the scaffolding and huts I opted for some higher ground. No 46115 a late replacement for the failed 35018 crosses the River Tweed with the town of Tweedmouth sitting below. Sadly having had glorious continues sun for over an hour the light dipped at the critical moment as it mostly does. Saturday 20th May 2023 The edinburgh Flyer copy.jpg

Agree. And this is a good example of a trip that is only possible with a train configuration that will involve mixed motive power. No complaints there. A good and unusual route.
