Not much here that hasn't already been covered by everybody else, but here's my offering from Saturday's events. Filmed at Baverstock, Honiton Tunnel, Burlescombe and Upton Scudamore. Hope you enjoy it, if you give it a watch :)

An excellent performance. It is interesting to compare this performance with that of 5660 with the
test trial from Bristol to Glasgow via Leeds and return in 1937.

5660 was holding 46mph with 305 tons gross at the top of the 1/100 after Settle,
work done against gravity ( loco plus consist ) c.1210 HP
5596 with 28 at the top of Honiton c.1230.
However the EDHP will favour 5660 and the IHP even more so ( 46mph vs 28 )

I merely quote these figures as whilst I can accept the double chimney may well improve steaming,
does it actually effect an increased maximum evaporation rate i.e. a greater maximum power figure.

A fascinating discussion point that has lifted what is often said in these situations from the mundane.

The gross on Saturday was 385 and the tricky bit of Honiton after a couple of miles at 1 in 100 is 1 in 80 although 'only' for around five miles. So a few of the input figures are different. But, we are talking here about what a crew is doing in 2023 contrasted with what was going on in 1937 when there was a whole shed load of loco crews to compare notes with each other. I think that I will therefore give more than a little bit of kudos to the crew on Saturday. Quite remarkable.

On a separate point, whilst all drivers know how to stop a train, of course, there are not too many nowadays who really seem to be the master of the brake. In my opinion, Bill Monteith is one of them. Within the restrictions of approach control he wastes no time in getting down to the speed he wants and minimises that time-wasting trundle up to stops and the like.

Just as a point of interest would anyone be able to share details please of which footplate crews were on each leg of Saturday's trip?
    Many thanks.

Pete Roberts to SAL. Bill Monteith from SAL to EXD to BRI to SAL. Bob Baines to London. The firemen...and they were brilliant...were Trevor Wrench down and Chris Yates back.

I'm sure this ACE will go down as one of the real highlights of 2023, and who better to report on it than a true Southern Man.

My Scottish correspondent who was on the train has estimated 1420 edbh on Grateley. It was done on 25-35 percent cut off and 200 psi. Not often that Pete Roberts drives any engjne this hard. Double chimney/ blast pipe does seem to make a big difference.
