That reminds me of a time when myself and a colleague had to move a 35t beam placed across the workshop through 90 degrees in line with the building to place on a low loader. It was also using two cranes.
It went quite smoothly for about 45 degrees at which the beam took over and pushed the overhead cranes into position.
I'll never forget the look on a manager's face as one end passed his office window...shear terror...

Latest news gives views of the Open Day yesterday, for those of us who could not attend. Sounds like it was a successful day!
I bet the works team are tired and happy, well done lads.

Looking rather good there. I note that round buffers have been fitted now to the front - great decision, looks authentic.

An interesting stack of plates required to produce a vital connection between engine and tender. Comparing it with the earlier CAD picture it shows what an intricate bit of the job this is! Obviously the CAD does not show the nearside plate.
Working backwards, I wonder when the tender will arrive?

Love to follow the Clan project. Excellent presentation of the progress and their "White papers'" analysing the potential issues in the the design are quite good. This should be done in all major projects to document how critical decisions are taken and the background to them.
Reading about the buffeting between loco and tender and that cl. 5 is mentioned reminded me of something I read many years ago. In his book Living With London Midland Locomotives (https://www.booklovers.co.uk/bookid.asp?ID=183716), A.J. Powel describes similar issues with the Black Five locos. But there the solution was not to change the draw gear but instead to change the valve settings to something that at first glance looked like quite odd. Unfortunately neither the issues nor the solution are described in such way that it is possible to draw any conclusions regarding the case with the Clans.

As I recall, the settings applied to these new Horwich built engines' valve events did not allow for thermal expansion of the valve spindles as the engines warmed up. Once this allowance was put in the harsh running disappeared and the engines ran like every other Black Five.

A colleague of mine waved his phone under my nose on Monday and asked if I knew the company in his photo... turns out he lives about a mile and a half from CTL Seal and it looks like they had an Open Day, so I was treated to several pictures of Hengist and the 'Sandringham'.

This incident is also referred to in A F Cook's LMS Locomotive Design and Construction (who may have quoted from Powell, he does not give a source), and Adrian Tester in An Introduction to Large Lap Valves and their use on the LMS who does refer to Powell. Closer to the Clan, Cox in Chronicles of Steam refers to a similar issue with the valves of the Britannias at Norwich which had been set cold without expansion allowance.

This weeks news update shows how the final large item is nearly ready to complete the integrity of the frames.
Lots of other parts needed still of course to complete the picture but well done to the work team and the CTL team.
