Without knowing the location - is this ‘drove through the gates’ as in the gates were open and she drove through them, or ‘drove through the gates’ as in they were shut and she smashed through them?

I don't know what happened on this occasion, but there is a history of local residents propping gates open, not closing them, and driving over the crossing without noticing nearby trains. Basically, laziness and impatience coupled with an attitude of entitlement. Perhaps there was another reason on this occasion and I hope that the lady concerned recovers fully (and all those who had to deal with the aftermath, of course) but it's hard to see what more could be done to protect the locals other than an expensive, fully automatic crossing - and who would have to pay for that?

I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

I can see how it's relatively easy to cross in front of and get hit by an approaching train, but to drive into the side of the last vehicle doesn't make any sense. Especially as it's doing little more than walking speed, so would've taken 20-25 seconds to pass over the crossing.

Looking at the image of the crossing on Google Earth it is difficult to see how anyone could miss seeing the train enough to hit the rear coach, unless there was brake failure on the vehicle.

Perhaps the driver had a medical episode.
    Let's wait for the reports.

As I said in an earlier post, the level crossing gates were closed.

Good news in that case - the railway can hardly be at fault under those circumstances but as a previous post has pointed out, it's rather perplexing as to what could have happened.

BBC local news has just said that the RAIB will be investigating the incident. I'm surprised at this. Perhaps the information I've been given is not totally correct although it was a plausible explanation. Need to check up on it tomorrow.

Edit, I've just spoken to a member of the crew and my understanding of what happened is essentially correct.

It’s notifiable so I’m sure they’d be looking. Whether it will get any further is up to RAIB.

Apologies if this has been covered before, but I may make it to the NYMR next week and I’d specifically love to ride in the teak set. Does it have set diagrams?

The teaks are in the non Whitby set which today comprised of a Thompson, three Gresleys and a Mk1. It is on the 10.55 and 14.10 service from Pickering and the 12.40 and 16.40 from Grosmont. Here it is arriving in Goathland behind 65894 on the 12.40 train today IMG_8122 copy.jpg

Possibly not as the 12.40 ex Grosmont and the 14.10 ex Pickering is the Moorlander Pullman Dining service on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so only 10.55 from Pickering and 16.40 from Grosmont are teaks on these days.

Let’s hope for rain! On our annual holiday next week and was going to get an annual pass and make a couple of visits. Thought they usually went top and tailed with a diesel first.

The forecast for York and Whitby is dry for the next week or so.

Yea I’ve seen, not holding out much hope. Might steam still be allowed Grosmont to Whitby?
