I would imagine the advise given to the Hoads will be to take the best offer, and ensure you get the crossings you need to ensure your farm can still function, they are business people first and foremost, the other land owners i'm not sure, one especially , I would think will fight tooth and nail, and possibly the CPO powers will be needed, but saying that, once you start waving pound signs in front of people, especially if they are told this is more than CPO says we need to pay, but we want to be fair, their tune can often change.

As I understand it, there are only two land owners affected.

In addition to the land valuation, compensation for the following items may be claimable:
    • disturbance payments;
    • loss payments; and
    • severance and injurious affection (where only part of the land is taken).
One of the issues raised at the inquiry was the possible location of accommodation crossings and cost of additional works, and additional loss of productive land, which the landowners might have to undertake (e.g. approach ramps & farm tracks etc.) in order to connect to them. IIRC RVR responding saying, because the landowners wouldn't negotiate, they'd had to guess where accommodation crossings might be needed but there could be scope for further negotiation once the Order was made.

If the landowners were now willing to enter informal negotiations (i.e. before RVR issue the formal CP notices) they'd be doing so in the knowledge of any offers for this land which RVR might've made at various times over the last 30 years. On the other hand, since then, both sides've incurred considerable costs via the Public Inquiry process. :(

And if the parties cannot agree there's a prescribed process for settling all compensation issues, after possession of the land is taken, so that land negotiations can no longer delay the scheme.

Does he sound that sure to you? Fact is, none of us KNOW right now. We can only guess.

Maybe the guess is based on what has gone on in the past.

@martin1656 does not say he knows anything. But what he says makes sense to me and sounds logical bearing in mind what we know of the participants in this lengthy saga.

Exactly - I wonder whether either of them is considering 'challenging' the decision. They applied for costs - I don't think that the decision on this has been published yet.

I've only just caught up with the recent news after so many weeks and months of more hope than expectation. I can't tell you how pleasing this is to this enthusiast, not only because I love the K&ESR, soon to be rejoined to the RVR but because I can visualise how much hard work time, effort and money has been put into keeping this going for so many years and with such unfialing optimism. Well done all of you, I can't wait to pay another visit soon, and with a bit of cash to spend.

Following the recent local election Rother Council has set key Priorities for the next 4 years. Included in the Tourism section is 'Support the proposed RVR link between Bodiam and Robertsbridge'.

I think the costs decision by the SoS is private to the costs applicant and the TWA Order applicant: if so it won't be published.

Fifty seven years ago, this evening, 32650 and two coaches were moved up the K&ESR from Robersbridge to Rolverden. The day, Whit Bank Holiday Monday, did not go well, as the terrier derailed, while attempting to get a third coach out of a siding, and it took the rest of the day to re-rail it.
I was staying with my grandparents who lived in Robersbridge at the time, and while I did not witness the derailment, I do remember watching the jacking and packing and re-railing. In the evening I watched the train cross Northbridge Street level crossing with my parents.
That morning it was explained that British Railways had forbidden the carriage of passengers on this stock move, but perhaps next time, one might be able to have a ride. I am still waiting (it is now too late for my parents) but feel confident that there will be a next time.

Great post and set of pics. I was a K&ESR volunteer from
1972-6 (at which point my family moved away from the area ) so missed the Robertsbridge operation era

@William Shelford ’s excellent post reminds me of the following linked account of a rare 1966 Tenterden-Robertsbridge return trip on the occasion of an ARPS (predecessor of the HRA) meeting held in the GWR railcar (W20W) at Tenterden. After the meeting the delegates were treated to the trip to Robertsbridge behind a Terrier, where they saw the H-class tank in storage and the P-class still in industrial service.
