Flying Scotsman NYMR Royal Train 12th June

A steam diner was run just the other week, with diesel assistance and additional firevehicle patrols, the same practices employed today. But this isnt neccesarily practicable for every train to run in this way.

The only air braked loco that has a boiler certificate but doesn’t have a mainline certificate is Taw Valley at the SVR. 60103 is also the only DB registered loco currently running on the mainline. Therefore if the Royal Train was going to be steam hauled on the mainline then it had to feature 60103. Kudos to everyone involved and to Network Rail for this to happen without incident and be kept a total secret.

What makes you think the footplate isn't clean?

 

I suspect that someone got the job of making sure that you could eat your dinner off any part of the footplate while HM was around.

With the NYMR crew concerned, I'm surprised Charlie wasn't roped into cleaning whilst he stood.

 

No surprise - it's only the train timings (before the event) which are top secret; I have been aware of staff being sacked for passing on train times to enthusiasts. When the Royal Train was hauled by 6233 Duchess of Sutherland along the North Wales route I guesstimated the times and posted them online before the event and was surprised to find out that my calculated times were within 5 minutes of the actual times. They proved so close that the owner of 6233 expected the loco to be withdrawn due to breach of security and some time later I apologised to him and explained how I had calculated the times from local press details of event times. In the event security wasn't compromised and the steam haulage went ahead without further incident.

IIRC it deflects heat from the sun thus cooling the cab occupants - a little !
