A topless German at Llanfair today!
Recently overhauled W&L No.10 Sir Drefaldwyn was in light steam in Llanfair yard this morning although still awaiting its cab which will be fitted in the next few days. After the arrival of the last service train No.10 was attached to the stock and took it to Welshpool and back as a running in turn. According to the crew nothing ran hot and the loco is expected to return to traffic next weekend.
    Ray.

Yesterday we ran a special train for supporters of 699 / Sir Drefaldwyn's restoration. Still in undercoat but looking and sounding very fine. Good to see this handsome and useful loco back in service. Come to the gala and see her in action![IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Funny looking black paint you have there.

Seriously though a fantastic achievement; during my visits to the W&L I have yet to see this loco, and will have to try to do so within its new 'ticket'.

Definitely good to see it back in action, but describing it as "handsome" is stretching the meaning of the term a little, imho! (and before anyone says anything, I'm not calling it ugly, either!)

Just noticed the two hoses. Vac and air brakes, or vac and steam heat?

As the OP said, still only in undercoat, will probably run like that until Gala before coming out to go black - but still to be determined as best I understand

I thought that this was an undercoat for full GW green with polished brass;)

Green livery and polished brass were not unknown on locos working in Austria. Although dome-mounted safety valves were more Dugald Drummond than GW.

Apparently the anticipated knashing of teeth likely to materialise ruled that out! (The addition of lining and “Southern” in big letters was also mooted……)

What about adding in the SECR lining, and lots of brassy bits - it worked wonders for Earl of Meirionydd...

    Sorry:)

"Sir Drefaldwyn" hurries away from the slow for the crossing at Cwm Lane on the last train of the day from Welshpool this afternoon.

Will Salzburger Nockerl be added to the afternoon tea menu when Sir D is hauling the train?

Lovely shot across the valley there Alan, even caught my best side - not to mention the cheery wave as we went by!

Given the forecast, it actually turned out rather nice in the end

So, now that 699 is done, what will be next into the works?

I admire the optimism! 699 still has a little way to go yet, just in terms of final fit and finishing and a couple of small modifications following the running that has been done.

There has been a fair bit of remedial work to ZB2 as well following some work on the stays to get that back into traffic, not to mention the running maintenance on 822 and the diesels, add to that the work before DL34 can enter service as well, some of which I believe is being done in house.

So probably a bit of a watch this space until that little lot is well under way - but my best guess is that 823 won’t be too far down the list in due course.

    Best wishes,

    Rich
