It was reported at the time of Gordons donation that a condition of the ownership transfer was that part of the agreement was it couldn’t be sold on.

Careful. The decision to hire 7812 to the WSR this year was a carefully arrived at tripartite EMF/WSR/SVR one. EMF locos remain SVR based but will take up opportunities to work and earn elsewhere when there is insufficient SVR need. This is nothing new and the SVR frequently provided steam locos to other railways for short visits or whole seasons in times past. Making full commercial use of them ensures they stand the best chance of remaining operational well into the future. 7812 returns to the SVR in early November to take a full part in the SVR winter season services.

Even if the new owner had signed such an agreement I can't see that being legally enforceable if they later changed their mind.

I probably missed something. What is “EMF”?

    Electro-motive force :)

Also, in this context, the Erlestoke Manor Fund, owners (I believe) of 7802, 7812 and 5164.

Once again I am aware of that. But it still doesn’t alter the fact that if you look at the base locos for the majority of this years season, and throw in those being worked on at Bridgnorth, both 02/12 and 5164, do and will have the opportunity to go elsewhere if the need arises. But as is general on here you get shot down for saying anytning

I’m completely agnostic on SVR based locos working for long periods elsewhere and bringing money to their owners as long as they remain SVR based locos - we clearly don’t actually need, or need to steam all the ones we’ve got in service.

the South Devon basically (until this year) hired a different loco every year to Chinnor for the entire season, didn’t mean anyone wasn’t aware they were SDR locos really. Win all round.

Why so? Quote: "The obvious is what one learnt yesterday". Until Tom explained, I wouldn't have worked out what "EMF" meant, though I am familiar with "emf" in lower case for electromotive force.

You might not get my sense of humour my friend, but the video in #3987 and this link might explain a few things… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMF_(band)

OK thank you. I did see the video link but ignored it because I detest the sort of music that I presumed it would be.

The problem is, the term 'the good of the movement' is a subjective one in and of itself - to me the concept heritage railways gaining resources by obtaining items sold by railways where they are deemed surplus to requirements (like the SVR) is much closer to what I would think of when I hear the term 'the good of the movement' than the concept of those resources from other heritage railways completely closing down.

I can't help thinking that if the timing had been a little different (and yes, I'm aware of the reasons why it's out of use), then the DMU could have had a useful role to play in the current predicament. Fingers crossed a return to service can be made reasonably soon.

Good to see the SVR advertising department getting their announcements in early for next years (presumably) spring diesel and steam galas in the new July 2023 Steam Railway! :D

Those adverts were printed in error and are NOT the dates for next year. Steam railway have already been conctacted by the marketing team to say they’ve printed in error.
