Indeed, it was a tongue in cheek comment to make the point that the SR have achieved several major coach restorations by contracting some of the work out. Swanage goods shed does get used for coach maintenance and repairs.

Taking that argument further every railway needs a Crewe works (other works are available) to sustain them. Heritage railways are small branch lines and the small sub sheds and carriage sidings that supported them in times past did not overhaul them, they sent them to Crewe. We no longer have a Crewe works to support these lines, only a cottage industry. That works and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I think can all agree IOWSR and MHR are no-no's.
    Bluebell and KESR are defos.

In fairness though, MHR do have two Bulleid coaches, if you want to run it on Ropley - Alresford shuttles [I do wonder why they have them since I hear nothing but bad things about them].

Major restorations apart isn't it going to be rather expensive if you have to send all your stock away on a low loader every time it needs minor maintenance? I always figure that (in any context) specialist stuff you do once in a blue moon should probably be outsourced to people who do it all the time, but routine stuff you do all the time should probably be kept on site.
One may note that the GWR, although heavily concentrated with one primary factory and a handful of secondary ones still maintained a network of smaller lifting shops. That was locomotive though, it has just occurred to me that I'm utterly ignorant of how carriage maintenance was done.

The LNWR and subsequently the LMS and BR had a whole major works for coaching stock but I don't know what proportion of the work was done there and what proportion locally.

I agree, though it doesn’t take many days additional labour in inefficient workshops to cost more than transport.

It’s also why a number of preserved railways have lost a lot of their branch line character, as facilities have been scaled up.

Being an Ex LSWR line I certainly wouldn't say the MHR is a no no!

It seems to be only you and one other user who think the MHR is a a no-no. To the rest of us it is one of the most obvious lines for it to visit.

The MHR is the only other preserved ex LSWR line. The only other line that has any LSWR tender locos - one currently operational and one due back on traffic in a couple of years in full LSWR livery. A line that has in the past hired in both the M7 and the T9 for galas. A line that has a plan to restore some LSWR coaches.

I’m interested to hear your reasoning for saying the MHR is a no-no?

special occation to mark the re enter to traffic of 499, would be the ideal time for an request to hire it, As i see it, even though the MHR is mostly late 50's early 60,s its still an former LSWR Secondary route, and one 563 might have operated over.

I have to ask why dose a loco have to go out nd visit palces - it wont make any money doing so. When I was younger, it was a draw to a specfiic railwy to see womething different rahter than wait for it to visit. Surly its a USP for Swanage and shoud be kept specail rahter than being ragged around on a lorry?

check out the GWSR blogs. (all well worth reading) Their C & W does excellent work and that is underlined by contract fitting out of coaches for the

You don't celebrate the return to steam of a loco by inviting something else to potentially upstage it! At some stage a LSWR gala would be excellent though, especially with as many in LSWR livery as possible. But I'm sure Swanage will want to hang onto it for a couple of years first before letting it out and about, it will after all be their flagship loco and star attraction.

It’s all just speculation on here about where it might visit in future. However the Swanage Railway have made it clear they want to play with their new toy, and stated it wont be going to visit anywhere else for a good 2-3 years.

I hope they do let her out to visit other railways down the piece once they have had her solely home based for a good period of time.

Look at the reaction to when 828 went on tour.........and also selfishly for people like me who live in the north of the country and spend much of our lives working away from home it gives the opportunity for others to see it who might not otherwise.

    Speaking for myself: yes indeed.

A strong influence on science is when instrument makers enabled concepts to be demonstrably proven or the inverse.
If you could not make the header - or the return bends in the elements - no fire tube superheaters, Schmidt style.

One could also make the same point about Swanage being set in a later era though, so not sure why that would preclude a potential visit to the MHR.

I just think the other railways [Bluebell, KESR] would appreciate it more.
Although people have seem to forgotten Spa Valley, although a former LBSC/SEC line, it would certainly pull the crowds.
