"We're going to need a lot of sand!"
'Flying Scotsman' has slipped to a stand at Griseburn while hauling the 13 coach 'Thames-Eden Express' from Carlisle to Hellifield on 8th October 1983.
A very memorable trip this one! It took nearly 2 hours to get from Appleby to Garsdale. From Hellifield 850 'Lord Nelson' was booked to work the train
as far as Stockport via Blackburn and Bolton. To save her having the same problem on the climbs to Wilpshire and Sough she was sent LE to Blackburn
and the train followed hauled by 31156 and 31159. At Blackburn 850 took the Steamtown support coach off the main train and, filled with passengers for the
Manchester area, myself amongst them, set off for Bolton and Stockport and, eventually, Hereford. The main train was taken direct to Crewe by a '47'.

Indeed, with a typical 1970s cine camera. Not only does this date preceed mobile phones it also preceeds video as well. It just reminds me about how far we have progressed with every day technology since I was a youf:).

A lot of the youth of today think they are the only ones who are masters of current technology and forget us septuagenarians have not only lived through all the changes, but have adapted and actually invented most of it! I still have a fully functional Sony Walkman cassette player with mega bass boost, played through my Sennheiser HD headphones sounds wonderful. My nephew's grand kids couldn't believe how good it was compared to the compressed clipped files they were listening to on their phones. I kept all my vinyl, a transcription deck, a four channel valve amplifier and purpose built speakers. The quality of the sound has to be experienced to be believed. However, the digital wrapround sound in my vehicle is fairly adept at dealing with road noise and gives acceptable listening whilst on the move. Horses for courses. We are not luddites when it comes to technology, we are technology!
