Nice... but what ruined that for me was (a) the raggle-taggle assortment of carriages behind and (b) why was that 47 giving so much assistance?

Not sure on the coaches, as for the assistance I believe it was only running on one engine. I rarely film diesels, usually steam, and it’s always a challenge trying to get steam only, I go and film a diesel and it’s being pushed by another diesel!

It was on two engines, but one seems to be permanently smoking. The other was running a lot cleaner.

The loco was running on one engine from around the Peterborough area for the remainder of the return.
When operating a 95mph path on a busy mainline, the 47 needed to provide the extra power needed to keep up.

Shunting before start of tour being blamed for oil usage and exit, a better explanation can be given if required.

" basically because the engines never have chance to rev and get under load properly so they are just almost idling. As the oil pumps are gear driven and therefore linked directly to engine speed this allows oil to settle in the galleries and journals. Also the engine won't get up to temperature properly so when a sudden demand of power is applied this oil will be forced past the piston rings that haven't properly expanded yet and henceforth oil sprayed out the exhaust."

    Noted from elsewhere...

Part of the assortment of stock was that what came down from Carnforth was not what was expected, hence needing a shunt at Burton (and associated late departure) and the addition of the Anglia coach in the consist.

Through Hadley Wood, 2 engines active, 1 under load.

3:26 you can see in the engine room windows high vis clad people . Presumably DPS engineers keeping tabs on how the engines are behaving (or an ultimate Deltic fix)

Yes noticed that, back cab is usually full of support engineers, just in case!!! Also I am sure 1 of the engines in No9, was destined for No 15, and not been run on the mainline for ages.

Varying reports on wnxx . Governer issue on one engine caused it to shut down . On road fix not possible, other engine reported low on power as well . Take both with a pinch of salt

Governer issue would cause it to not make power, we had that going into Edinburgh a while ago, the governer controls the fuel rail.
Low power on other, could not comment, seems to have been fine on heritage running, and test run.

    Pinch of salt taken!!!!

It does seem relatively rare to have a Deltic running on both engines throughout on the main line these days.

I know the set of Blue and Grey Mk2s (with a few mk1s) was in use on the GBRf staff charter from Ipswich to Paignton on Saturday (and the subsequent one-way BLS tour on Sunday), though I don't know who owns those and if they would be used on a West Coast operated tour. In any case, I just about saw the Deltic near Whittlesea and then under much better conditions at Frinkley Lane near Grantham.
