    What the ?

Presume splitting loco & tender at Swanage wasn't an option then.

Assume Multiple unit means top and tail diesel one end loco other, so no need to detach. To the computer it probably amounts to the same thing.

Guess even on a Sunday a 35mph loco all the way to Eastleigh on the mainline and back wouldn't go down too well... imagine it can have a 50 path if towed

Isnt 34067 taking on water at eastleigh on the way back?

isn tit double heading with manston?

Turning move to get it facing the right way for teh tour back to Waterloo, Eastleigh is the nearest location with a triangle, unlikely it will need water as the diesel towing it tender first on that move will be doing the lions share of the work.

Manston is not currently mainline approved and haven't heard of any plans to do so, if you mean internally on Swanage metals then possible but haven't heard any plans to do so yet, whether the train with 34067 is operating in Air or Vacuum mode is also a consideration.

According to Past Time website (updated to 17th April) :

    The Dorset Coast Express (2/5/09)
Seats left - 13 Standard; First SOLD OUT; 18 Silver Service.
Tangmere to Swanage/WCRC Class 47 back

    The Royal Wessex (4/5/09)
No seating update provided - presumably seats available in all three sections.
WCRC Class 47 to Swanage/Tangmere back to London

It should be the Green Train, which is vacuum only.

It would indeed be great for 67&70 to double head.

I assume the turning move is necessary as Tangmere is too big for the turntable at Swanage. In fact I recall that 76079 had to be split from its tender for turning when it visited in 2007. So how large a loco can be turned on the Swanage turntable?

Isn't this going to be a problem for future tours visiting Swanage since a) it means you can only have steam in one direction and b) you need to organise a separate turning move which presumably costs quite a bit?

    Hi

I believe Tangmere was designed with a "quick release" tender so that turning could be completed more quickly than normal if it was to take place on a smaller turntable where the engine and tender needed to be split.

Not true, 76079 did fit on the turntable, albeit only with a couple of inches to spare.

I think you are right, Alex, and that the Swanage turntable was the one the original owner had in mind. However, there was mention in another recent thread of this causing extra problems in terms of re-inspecting and possibly re-certifying the loco after it has been split from the tender and reunited. Does anyone with relevant experience know whether this is correct, and what the extra processes are?

Rumpole, You beat me to it. I was one of the turntable 'pushers' for Ian Riley's "Pocket Rocket" and it fitted a treat without splitting.
    Getting back on thread -
Still no updates, from Past Time Rail, regarding The Royal Wessex on 4th May but
Saturday 2nd May's The Dorset Coast Express is (as at 21/4/09) Standard Full; First Full; Silver Service - 15 seats remaining.

    Its rather odd this one....

If it was a "multiple unit" it would be described as 5Z98.
If she is going with her support coach it would be descibed as a 5Z98.

0Z98 idicates that it is a light engine(s) movement

As far as I know, the movement is purely to turn Tangmere.

We're not expecting any oil burner turning up at the gates to drag her screaming off to the triangle. So there are two options - engine + support coach, or more likely just the engine going out tender first and returning tender first. Pretty sure LE moves can go either way round at line speed, but will bow to greater knowledge if this is not the case. May be flagged as MU since technically the "engine" is at the back but its pretty tenuous. More likely finger trouble.

When I last looked it was 0Z98 on TRUST.

I suspect the reason it is shown as a multiple unit is that the section running times for a Sandite MPV were used to calculate the schedule. Class 8 sandites are timed at 35 mph, just what is needed for a tender first steam loco.

    Cheers, Neil

I think you are incorrect Neil.....

If it is a light engine movement it will be 0Z98.

The multiple unit must be some sort of typo error....

Anyone visiting us on either Saturday 2nd May on BH Monday 4th May please be aware we have had to change our scheduled timetable on both days to accommodate the incoming/outgoing special trains and their associated ECS movements.
With apologies if these changes cause you any inconvenience - you can view the revised timetables on http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/tangmere.htm
The revised Swanage Railway timetables are themselves subject to change on the day - depending upon the timekeeping of the tours to their Network Rail schedules of course.

I'm not disputing the class of the train, but how a light engine is shown as a multiple unit ...
On "trainplan" it is possible (although not desireable) to use any timing load to create a schedule and then amend the train to a different class. 0Z98 would have been created using a sandite MPV timing load (35 mph) and the train classification changed to class "0". TSDB only reflects what is uploaded from trainplan.

Sorry for a technical note, but I spent 7 years using trainplan.

    Regards, Neil
