Reading page 1, did the boiler situation ever progress?

Wasn’t it bought or given from the Keighley and Worth Valley?

On a slightly controversial note, a cue for the GWS to step in and use 9629 as the basis for a new-build Dean Goods?...............

No. As explained on page 1 of this thread, the boiler it carried upon withdrawal was recovered from Didcot.

Restoration progress about 8 years ago was outlined in this video (part 1 of 3 available on the same YouTube channel).

I just hope it goes to a good home - a developing and expanding line in mid-Wales would be fitting!

Having just watched the 8 year old youtube vids and the seemingly positive outlook for the engine at that time, it seems a little saddening that the owning group haven't been able to make progress.

Does anyone know the current condition of the engine, or what the back story is for the decision to sell?

On present performance, more likely a new build Great Bear! ;)

On a more serious note, if someone was considering a new build GWR 0-6-0 an Armstrong Goods would fill a gap much better, albeit no idea of boiler compatibility etc.

A shame that the PBR will be losing its last GWR loco. It once had several, albeit all unrestored. I suppose reality has it the owners, and they have realised restoration is beyond their means.

There may have been a few Standard (Armstrong) Goods fitted with P class (eg 2301/5700etc) boilers, but by and large they had O class boilers, about 9in longer in the barrel.

The most obvious things to do with an unwanted 57 chassis and boiler would be Dean Goods or 1854 or 2721 saddle tanks. The saddle tanks aren't to my mind good looking though.

I’d suggest the most obvious thing to do with it would be to restore it as a pannier tank. A useful little loco that would suit many preserved lines. Just because the P&BR have given up on it, doesn’t mean someone else won’t be keen to restore 9629.

A post and "likes" that demonstrates with some clarity that whilst many railway enthusiasts possess enthusiasm in abundance that is compensated for by a reduction in their sense of humour or the ability to spot a not-entirely-serious post!

I assume it will come down to money.

How much might it cost to buy and how much might it cost to restore ?

I saw some posts last year on facebook, it seemed like Mark Vrettos didn’t appear to have as much involvement- previously it appeared he was largely responsible for driving the project forward and collecting the missing components.

Seems a shame for it to be sold, but hopefully it will find a new home with a newly reinvigorated restoration plan- it’s always amazing when a “impossible” project gets completed.

    I noticed that too.
Mark also seemed to have been a main player in the P&B vintage carriage project which now seems to have stalled.
    I hope he is ok

Are you speaking for Jimc in saying there was no seriousness involved in his comments?

Whether serious or not, it was time to get back to the discussion of why 9629 is being sold and what might actually happen to it.

No, I wasn't being serious about the possibility of converting it to a Dean Goods, which was the post that triggered JimC's post.
