I find it very disappointing for this sale to have taken place without consultation (or any prior notice being given to) the membership. The only previous statement the SVR has made about 45110's future is Gus Dunster's statement that nothing is off the table in terms of sales. It's a big jump from that statement to sanctioning and completing a sale.

I hope wherever it is going it has a working future, preferably one that involves working on the SVR.

Yes it does seem that consulting the members wasn’t considered an option, I myself am disappointed that having made that decision, the railway doesn’t inform the membership first, deciding instead to release the story via Rail Advent. It’s not the first time either that those closest seem to get that information last.

It will also be interesting to see if anything else is sold, the article mentions the railway considering selling other rolling stock too.

Yes, that hadn't escaped my notice, and as you say the railway had recent form for this approach to announcements.

Given the historical importance of the loco as a 15 guinea loco, plus the significance to the SVR story as one of the first locos to arrive it does es feel like a decision the board should have consulted the membership on. Not to mention the railway's need for the ongoing support of its members. There's value in keeping the masses on side...

As a member I don’t really have a problem with this. It is a piece of machinery with no likely prospect of a return to service soon so I see no reason to retain it.

It was always likely that things would be sold when the emergency appeal was announced and given the rate of fund raising I’d be surprised if this is the only thing to go.

Why should the company consult the membership over a commercially sensitive sale?

You have to remove the emotional connection and look at the pure hard facts. Sell an asset that isnt going to be overhauled within the next 15 years and use the monies to sustain the railway and ensure it is still here tomorrow, next week, next month, next year.

The logic behind the sale is sound but to turn your question on it’s head, why can’t the railway tell the members or shareholders first of the sale rather than Rail Advent as the first port of call?

There's a lot of daylight between the approach the board has chosen and disclosing commercially sensitive information.

I don't dispute the financial realities but it'd be naive to think that emotions don't come into it. The preserved railway movement as a whole relies hugely on the emotional attachment between railways and their supporters. You have to bring the people with you.

I find the part of the press release quite interesting.

“The loco left the SVR by road on 15th August, with the timing of the announcement restricted as a condition of the sale.

Two things, firstly as a member and a shareholder yes I feel that this shouldn't have been made public via Rail Advent first and secondly which side put "timing" in as a condition of sale?

Facebook rumours say that the tender was dropped off at Carnforth.

Which would also make sense as to why its not being stated as to where its going. They generally like their privacy.

Not so much "consulting the membership", but, most certainly, consulting the shareholders. Another own goal by the management.

Tbf the NBI was on Teams at 11.34. Some departments are rather slow at sending the NBIs out.
