    Define 'a few'

Has anybody been getting any on-train updates? Presumably this was just for covenantors?

Are we even sure that motorways were barred? Multimap had the jounrey with M-ways as 7 hours 36 mins non stop, which considering Tornado has just done it in 'a few minutes' short of 8 hours is pretty close anyway. If they required May and Hammond to park legally on the street in Waverley, they would have had no chance.

AA route planner has it as 7 hr 17 min using M-ways, and a whopping 9 hr 32 min avoiding Motorways.

I think Tornado has pissed it.

I agree, a brilliant achievement. Getting what should be a substantial amount of very positive coverage, on a program estimated to have a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions, not only benefits Tornado and the A1 trust but the whole of the steam movement. Im looking forward to June :)

I wonder if Clarkson will be converted to a 'Train Spotter' ? Should be spending a day on the footplate of Tornado! Most of us here would give a right arm for a day like his today.

What makes you think he was ? while im sure he would of visited the footplate, i bet he was on the cushions for 75% of the trip, unless your into steam in a big way being on the footplate for 8 hours woulden't be that appealing.

While on the subject is there a reason only seemingly the chime whistle gets any use while out mainline ?.

From what I saw at York, no way would you have allowed Clarkson on the cushions, the state he was in. I think he'd been having a serious go on the shovel - that wasn't make up, or smeared on for effect!

He was on the footplate leaving KX and arriving at Edinburgh, so it seems likely he was in the cab for most if not all the trip. Besides, its not that suprising that this appeals to Clarkson - he's a huge fan of heavy engineering so this is right up his street, especially as it was him taking the train instead of May who you'd expect to be doing it.

THIS post from someone on the train makes very interesting reading, apparently Clarkson was due off at York but stayed on the footplate throughout.
