Because - my friend - I am prepared to stand up and say when something is nonsense.

The fact that so many people had worked out the bones of the schedule from what was already in the public domain shows how ridiculous was the attempt to keep this run from the public gaze.

I thought this was National Preservation - not National Security

This run has also proved that there is no need for the ten to twelve hour timings that have been imposed on the paying excursion passenger on recent excursions.

If you want compliant then stay in your little world - I'll be the one looking down and smiling - ruefully.

By the way - who were the "passengers" on this secret train - and by what means did they get to ride? - Its licence payers money that paid for it, so I don't see why we shouldn't be told

I am torn. Pissed off the car won, but happy that it seems like it was Clarkey that wanted to ride T, so I think he's not going to be too hard on the preservation movement with the quips in the prog. Of course he's going to rip the piss out of the number takers, but for a guy like him to actually get on board with the principle of new builds and running steam in 2009 is only a good thing. Then again, he did just blow up one of the last remaining Routemasters just for the hell of it (and a decent one by the looks of it), so maybe he should not be praised too hard. Of course, buses get in the way of cars, trains don't. But how many people have the luxury of having their journey start and end at a rail station, or have the use of a car at both ends?

The BBC may be classed as publicly owned but that does not mean they have to tell you what they are up to. I would imagine that they did not want a platform full at major stations as they wished to film without interuption. This was a private charter at the end of the day and as such the promoters have every right to keep details confidential.

It's a nark when you know it's you're money through the license fee that has paid for this trip, and then you have been prevented from being allowed to get a decent shot for reasons that many see as being over cautious. Bear in mind, if I am correct, this is only the second time she has actually run with a proper rake, after last weeks pullman. Look at the pic above, it's fantastic. Had this actually been a kept secret, that pic would not exist. But anyway, this is just griping, it's not like the program would be any good if it was paid for by ITV now is it? Ant on the footplate, Dec in a Jag, Simon Cowell in a motorbike with Susan Gargoyle in the sidecar.

    It is

    Look at it this way...

If Top Gear had not paid out for the trip - and yes I know it is all our money, that would be one less steaming fee to the A1 trust. On top of this NXEC/Network Rail have shown that the timings are possable, and at 75mph. They have also shown that in the main their operations can work together to create a clear path for a special event - though I would not expect them to do this on a regular basis - this is more akin to when Virgin did the "GLC-EUS in under 4 hours" special.

Some great shots there Jonathan. Not sure what my mates will think if I told them I look like those pics of Jezzy after every railtour I do! Well done to Network Rail and NXEC Co-operating though for what should make a great film. Have heard they were ahead of James just until that stopping train was put in front of them, without it they may have made it.
