I was of the same opinion but at the last minute I changed my mind simply because I realised that it would probably never happen again in my lifetime. To see all those A4's together, two of which I hadn't seen since the sixties, did bring a lump to my throat. I wasn't bothered about taking any photographs and was just content to wander around them at close hand and stand in the cabs. Even SWMBO, who has no real interest in railways was impressed by the sight and thought it worth the effort.

Exactly so. Yes, you'll be unlikely to get photos as good as those seen in the magazines at such events, but the whole point of it was to experience what may well be unrepeatable, certainly in the lifetime of quite a few of us. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did family members who came along too. I sadly missed the Great Goodbye due to work, but had gone to Shildon when 60008 and 60010 arrived, simply because, again, this was going to be unrepeatable, especially as 60010 was going to get the makeover in the workshops before going to York.

Just passed Crewe and the boiler is being fired with plenty of smoke coming out of chimney. Only a brief glimpse from a late running 9:33 to Manchester

there is still quite a lot to do, and there is still the system tests to ensure everything works as it should, I would not expect to see 60532 on mainline test runs before end of the year, November/ December

That was only a boil-up yesterday, not a steam test.

You mean you can't do a steam test with the safety valves missing? ;)

Clearly this was not the official test then, quite often once you've passed the hydraulic, you will raise steam gently, in stages to ensure that everything is still sound, and the safety valves are set before the official test, If I remember correctly you are allowed to carry out further testing to set safety valves under steam, before the actual official steaming in the presence of the examiner, that of course is only the first stage, there is then a second stage when the loco is complete when the various systems, are tested by moving under its own steam when if passed the loco is then signed off,

Its called having been involved with loco restorations and there is a lot of work that needs to be done, even once the steam test is done, the boiler needs to go back in the frames, everything plumbed up, electronics installed then, theres more testing, to ensure it all works as it should, test runs, Mileage acquisition, then a trip to the paint shop, it can take several months from passing the steam test, to ready to run, even on the most simple of engines, without complex electronics. air braking, and all the other add on's needed for mainline running.

If you look at the photo you will see that no safety valves are in place. The steam is coming out of the two holes in the seatings. Also the fire doors have not been fitted.

I'm aware of that but you quoted Nov/Dec so you must have detailed information from LSL or are being somewhat surmising...
