Unfortunately Paul, the Swanage Railway does not have the luxury of an Train Story to house stock awaiting overhaul, or to act as covered accommodation for its operational stock, in the future it very well might , if it can access the former oil terminal site, but until then it can only use what it has.

It does raise the question of what is happening with the Herston carriage shed though? Delayed by covid, but 3 years later still hasn’t materialised.

On a recent visit the railway, seeing the condition of even relatively recently restored
coaches such as 5761 does show how much the shed is needed.

I did enjoy a ride in one of the Maunsell coaches on my visit. What a breath of fresh air from the usual Mk1s, and credit due to the railways heritage coach group.

Or if the renovation had been achieved at the Isle of Wight, an excellent renovation. Sour grapes? <BJ>

Heritage coaches, carriage sheds should be discussed on the Swanage Railway thread.

Martin, can you have another look at the admirable video and close in on the heaps of "stuff" dumped behind the immaculate locomotive? It is the grot heaps which passengers see through the carriage windows Very few of the visitor attractions competing with "heritage" railways would have their detritus so prominent. In the present trading conditions this needs sorting ASAP and the Swanage line is by no means the only offender.

Then go and make that point in the Swanage Railway thread.

You're not wrong to raise it.

But this isn't the time or the thread. Let the railway and its supporters have its day in the sun with the T3.

Which of about three current threads do you suggest then? I do agree about the timing though. It should have been some decades ago.

Probably the one for general discussion is most suitable, but not the ones for the T3, Project Wareham or the various entries in the Galas and Events section just to be crystal ;)

The elaborate LSWR and other pre grouping liveries do look good on these earlier locos, far better I would say than the liveries chosen by companies after the grouping, Southern Olive, will seem drab, after this vibrant livery, It will be interesting to see if 53, when its done joins its stablemate, in LSWR livery,

Indeed yes. You only need to look as Stroudley's "Improved Locomotive Green", which when applied with all the secondary lining and shading as per say Stepney or Gladstone. Then the plain Ochre[?] when applied to the class 52 Western hydraulics without the secondary lining and shading

Indeed so. The video which did demonstrate the point that needs to be made was in the T3 thread though

Fingers crossed, but if I was a betting man my money would be on BR black again.

I wonder when testing of 563 will begin.

I would think quite soon, the summer seasons now nearly over, things should be beginning to quieten down, traffic wise, that will free up gaps in the timetable to enable testing and getting some miles under its wheels, and for crews to get used to it, I don't think you would want to risk a large wheeled 4-4-0 in the leaf fall season , it will be interesting to see how she compares to the T9.

Careful - don't tempt fate! The Black Brigade tend to get their way in livery debates.

According to the GER Society web-site, Adams himself used black when he was GER loco superintendent (1873-8), on locos such as this:

    https://www.gersociety.org.uk/locomotives/w-adams/no-265

It will be interesting to see how the newly-painted No 563 appears in bright sunshine. It should certainly turn the heads of locals in Swanage and perhaps attract more custom to the railway.

There are those on here that have already suggested it in the past, to enable it to ‘blend in’ at the Swanage Raikway.

These photos show that LSWR green was absolutely the right choice. It really makes the loco stand out as something special, the jewel in the crown of the railway. Hopefully a major attraction that will draw more visitors to the railway.

That LSWR green looks great, some pre group liveries were smart, and this is one. The pea green colour it was in before work started I wasn't keen on though. It's such an elegant looking loco though that it would still look good in later, plainer, colours such as Southern olive green

Looks like the tender has already been filled with coal and ready to go.

I wonder how many years ago since that tender was last coaled up, certainly not since its appearance at the Waterloo celebrations.
