That gives the lie to the excuse that everyone was too busy to inform potential customers that 34072 would not be running.

But if the roster page is updated by office staff using HOPS as the information source then the roster reflected the information they had .
HOPS still showing 34072 running tomorrow and Thursday ..but it isn’t .

Is City of Wells not out of ticket and under overhaul or is it finished already?

34092 was supposed to be having a fast- track overhaul, if it’s back in service for October that will have been a very rapid turn around!

Finished. Just shows of the quality of the previous overhaul and maintenance since. Hydraulic passed last week, needs repaint & its own tender back, which will require another one to be sent north.

Hang on - you are saying "hydraulic passed last week" yet also "finished". So a steam test and all the necessary reassembly has taken place in a week?

That's a new variation on written scheme requirements I've never seen or heard of before.

Is the hope that 13065 will be out again to replace her- is there any news on how the boiler is progressing?

Even without removing the boiler, a week between hydraulic and "finished" seems impossibly quick: you've got to refit fittings like gauge glasses, safety valves, feed pipework etc, arrange a steam test in that time, then things like reattach all the cladding, fit the cab and so on ... All in a week.

Last I heard, all work on that has stalled due to lack of resources. Don't know if it'll pick up again once Wells is finished or not. From what I read, it basically needed a whole new boiler, so it'll be a long/expensive job.

On another note, I wasn't sure where else to ask this, but does anyone know what became of the planned loan move for L&Y tank 1008 from the NRM? It was reported months ago that it was due to join Wren on display in the transport museum, but it doesn't seem like that's happening at the moment given it remains in place around the turntable in the Great Hall even with all the reshuffling of exhibits there at the moment. I had wondered if maybe the situation at the railway re:Joanne had prompted them to cancel that loan or if another factor has come up in regards to it.

I am really struggling to figure out how this is compatible with the pressure systems regulations. The access to the foundation ring is good, but…

Like you, I find it unusual. However, the Pressure Systems Regulations are silent on the matter. The only requirement is for there to be a Written Scheme of examinations and that scheme is the owners scheme. It must, however, be approved by the Competent Person (Boiler Inspector) and this appears to be the case. There is guidance on the subject originally produced by HMRI/ORR and now incorporated into the HRA Guidance and this is outside that guidance. Having said that, nothing should be written in tablets of stone and this approach may become an accepted norm. The Competent Person will have done his examinations and made an assessment and he will hopefully be far better informed of the situation than us on Nat Pres.

Agreed. I do know of an engine (9F) which got through a similar sort of scheme without the boiler coming out because the access to the foundation ring was so good. I’m not questioning the thing, I’d just like to know more about it, but not from Nat Pres.

Have the coupling rods, connecting rods and motion been taken down and checked for fractures and wear?
Have all the copper pipes been annealed?
No matter how well a loco has been put together, you will not stop wear and tear.

Not sure I fully understand the economics of this one, surely it will need another extended period out of traffic in 5 years time for a full boiler lift and strip down? Probably cheaper now, but pushing costs further down the line?
