yes i must admit, i am confused as to why, externally, nothing should have changed, that should have effected clearances, or is it that the changing of pipework on the frames for new electronics, has meant that because of the position of the pipe runs, the boiler can't fit as it should, not ideal, but a darned easier to solve than more boiler work.

Nothing to do with changes to the frames, wiring or pipework.
Never mind santa will bring a new boiler for Xmas.

Would the boiler fit GWR 2-8-0?

    Sorry.

    Couldn't help myself.

No, but it might form the basis of a GWR Great Bear 4-6-2 lookalike.

Back to being serious, a wide firebox essentially sits atop of the frames so it shouldn’t be a width problem. I don’t know what work has been done but it will probably have had a new smokebox. Has this been badly attached? Pure speculation on my part but it’s a problem I can understand. No doubt we’ll get to know eventually.

    Correct it's a length problem.
Think of what happens to a boiler during it's lifetime and the result.
When someone answers correctly we can have some more guesses.

Sounds like its more than the smokebox being out of alignment, has it had a new front tubeplate, that's been welded to the barrel and put in too far back, so in effect shortening the barrel length? if the boiler was then trimmed, it would have not been apparent unless you measured the boiler length, and compared it to the drawings,

No, there have not been any man made structural changes to the boiler or smokebox or their attachment.

Now, i am just totally bemused, if its not as a result of recent changes, then i'm lost, metal can suffer from stress cracking, and warpage from repeated heat cycles, but that should have been noticed during its last spell in traffic, prehaps someone with in the A1 trust should now come forward, explain what the problem is, and how its been caused, and what the remedy is,

I feel strongly that John Merrys continual “there’s a problem but I’m not going to be the one to tell you” antics are really damaging here.

Either come out with it and take the consequences of it, or leave it alone.

Again, this sort of behaviour doesn’t help anyone in the industry. In fact it is damaging.

Remember there are people behind the trust. We have recently had an incident in Scotland which has its own repercussions on people’s mental health.

At the end of the day, engineering sometimes goes awry. Solutions may be being sought behind the scenes. Anyone who feels strongly about it should contact the trust directly rather than engage in this frankly ridiculous back and forth on here.

And with respect to Mr Merry, I don’t find the tone of your posts or what you’re saying to be conducive to any solutions. So you’ve had some disappointments with railtours? Join the club, we have all had that experience.

Some of us here volunteer and help to organise said railtours, how do you think we feel when it doesn’t go to plan?

At the end of the day, there are people behind every aspect of your rail tour experiences, and there should be some level of understanding and respect for their feelings too.

a six figure sum for rectification was mentioned, I think - that seems a lot for an ashpan or smokebox!

    I blame the tender.

Hell,it's about the only part of the locomotive that hasn't been promulgated on here.

I agree with Simon. The playground attitudes on here are ridiculous. Either come clean or sit tight.

The Tornado lot have had a lot of crap over the years. Anybody remember the earlier 'non compliances' during construction?
That's before we get to the Ebor incident, let alone the current issues.

I agree, the Trust is not always forthcoming when problems arise, they are not alone there. We run a country on that basis!

What they have achieved is marvellous, far better than anyone could have imagined in the 1960s.
Such speculation, however valid, will only cause damage.

I'm still struggling to see how it can "not fit". It's a wide firebox that perches on top of the frames. The only real constraints in dimensions are the distance between the reverser and the back of the frames. If the firebox has distorted that much it's a real worry.

It sits with the smokebox on the saddle, intermediate saddle for boiler barrel and expansion mounts under the throatplate foundation ring plus the backhead foundation ring. The only mounting point where it is rigid to the frames is smokebox end.
