Either an ambitious preservation society or one of those companies that tries to convert 2nd gen DMUs into weedkilling/track measurement trains? Maybe.

If the franchise and leasing systems weren't completely broken, owning one out right would make more financial sense over a few years but it'll probably end up with Hosking and repainted into Regional Railways or Strathclyde livery.

Is this half unit the result of a collision somewhere that scrapped the other half?

156478 had it's RETB equipment removed during 2015, but was re-fitted following the completion of refurbishment and accident repairs. 156478 returned to service in October 2016. The unit is now owned by Brodie Engineering, Kilmarnock.

    from http://www.scot-rail.co.uk/page/class+156#google_vignette

doesn't say how it comes to be owned by Brodie

On the Glasgow/Carlisle route, unit 156478 became partially submerged in floodwater. It remained immersed for several days where the underframe and equipment became flooded and the interior was also water damaged.

Upon its rescue, the unit was determined as an insurance write-off and was subsequently purchased by Brodie Leasing, which is a sister company to Brodie Engineering.

A C4 and C6 overhaul was carried out along with work on all electricals and the unit received a full interior and exterior refresh.

Brodie returned it to service in Oct 2016, so it's not like they've bought it and flipped it a few weeks later.

Ahh right - so it's been running with Scotrail presumably since? Thanks! Tbh, I was more confused as to what benefit there might be to them in spending loads overhauling it then immediately selling a 30 year old unit! Makes sense now.

The change of policy is down to a change in personnel on the Bluebell Railway board, with the new regime having a more practical and realistic approach to many matters, not least Pullmans - previous plans extended to the totally unaffordable and impractical ambition of a catering train extending to 7-8 Pullmans!
I wrote the following explanation, just published in Bluebell News (and subsequently, Carina has also been sold, to someone with an existing involvement in Pullman restoration, who will make good use of it at a private site, and will care for it):

Pullman Strategy - acquisition and disposals

Pullmans ‘Carina’, ‘Aquila’ and Car 36 have been re-assessed as to whether they can practically contribute to our future plans. ‘Carina’ was obtained as a back stop in case we couldn't obtain another Pullman Kitchen car, but as explained below, is no longer required in that role. Since it is a stripped shell, we have no foreseeable use for it, and it is currently being offered for sale.

‘Aquila’ looks superficially very nice, because the interior has been beautifully restored by the previous owner. The body on the other hand would require a huge amount of work to return it to operational condition, and the estimate to fix it in house is £600k. So, in spite of having purchased the coach only recently, it has now been sold, since Car 36 is more readily restorable, and provides the seating capacity required by the strategy described below.

The newly revised and sustainable Pullman strategy will see us using the recently obtained Mk.1 BG No. 81025 as a kitchen and support vehicle, which will release the LMS BGZ to be returned to its award-winning LMS condition inside and out, and avoid us needing to rely on extremely cramped kitchens within historic Pullmans. The strategy sees a core 3 coach Pullman train operating once Car 54 is completed (97 covers), and, once Car 36 is restored, the train can be enhanced to four coaches (139 covers, all within classic 1920s Pullmans) for the busiest part of the year, and giving us, for the first time ever, the ability to take each Pullman coach (including Fingall) out of service for repainting and maintenance on a rotating basis for up to six months each year.

This is possible because Car 36 has 42 seats (as against Aquila's 22). If Aquila were restored instead of Car 36, when either Car 64 or Car 54 was out for maintenance the number of covers would be too low.

Notable new For Sales in the latest Traction Ads is Clyde/ Ingrid at Spa Valley and Renishaw at Tanfield. Both with about as fresh as it gets tickets.

Interesting to hear about Renishaw; nobody was quite sure if it would stay at Tanfield or move to Aln Valley which I believe is where its current owner is based. I was told that Tanfield wanted to keep it but the owner had hoped to move to AVR. Maybe the ‘compromise’ has been to go with neither option?
