Looks nice :) Can the next one be BR Blue, please? I was fascinated by the idea of a steam engine in BR Blue as a young spotter in 1975...

The new engine shed museum opened its doors today, here is a post on Facebook showing how it looks https://www.facebook.com/groups/narrowgauge/permalink/24386905344228164/?mibextid=oMANbw

It reveals the Jung of the Brecon Mountain Railway is now there, as well as a Dick Kerr petrol-electric and the Model T Railcar previously owned by the late Adrian Shooter. Currently all stock in the museum appears to be two-foot gauge but some stretches of duel gauge have been put in allowing scope for other parts of the collection to appear at some point.

Was the Vale of Rheidol still hauling freight in the 1950s? Wouldn't she have been a mixed traffic or pure passenger loco... at which point lined black or green.

...and as she hauled the fastest passenger trains on the line...blue? <fx: runs away>

1213 returned from Swindon in March 1949 renumbered nr 9 in unlined black. A lion over wheel transfer was applied to both tanks in 1954.Plain green from 11/6/56.
After 1954 nr 7 and 8 were painted unlined passenger green with transfers as nr 9.All were lined green for the 1957 season onwards, and a simplified lined green from 1960 to 1968.

It will be black for running in, so it'll only take a couple of Lion and Wheel transfers. I'm down for it!

Not necessarily, the original GWR built Manors (i.e. not 7820-9 which were lined) were turned out in unlined black in the 50's and they were passenger/mixed traffic locos.

Interesting. Did No9 have a BR smokebox number plate while it was plain black? I'm not aware of when BR applied the nameplates - did they have them before going into BR lined green? I also didn't know that there were two versions of BR lined green. What were the differences please?

The nameplates were fitted in 1956, plain green livery at that time with lion over wheel totem. Lined green from 1957, with new style BR emblem. I was not aware that there were two styles of lined green. I first saw these engines in 1964 and the lining was normal BR express passenger style, on tank and bunker sides. I have some colour slides somewhere.. If that was the simplified version of the lining, what was the other one like?

From the ilustraitions in the VOR Railway in Detail the cylinders were lined, and lining of the tanks dropped down in front of the Cylinders to follow the shape of the tanks.

Hmm. Not 100 percent sure about the cylinder lining, but when I first saw no. 8 in 1964 the lining on the tanks certainly dropped down at the front to follow the outline of the tanks. I'll have to look for those photos.

    So, to summarise:-
No 8 never carried BR "Lion and Wheel" plain black, getting BR unlined green after 1954. Presumably GWR unlined green until 1954?
No 9 was the only one to carry BR unlined black - until gaining BR unlined green in 1956.
The nameplates were fitted in 1956 when all three were BR plain green.
Smokebox number plates were fitted around 1964 (at least N0 9 was), so only appeared with BR lined green and unlined blue.
    Is that correct?

Nr 9 had it from April 1960, and Nr 7 from April 1961. Photos of both in the book. No mention about nr 8 or photos.

Yes except 1954 rather than 1964 for smoke box number. Photos of nr 7 and 8 from 1955 with them, ilustraition states from 1954.
