That's very unfortunate. Most schools are on half term the following week in October, 28th - 1st November.

Edit - schools in England. Scotland is earlier in October.

Noted, but we work it around BST, ie. when the clocks go back.

I'd query "most", though local authorities do vary.

Indeed they do. The Worth Valley is running half term services both this week and next in recognition of the fact.

That's not uncommon to be honest. I only ever managed one October HT in Scotland throughout my teaching years :(

Why though? Only the morning train runs on the shoulders anyway. Surely it makes more sense to run GMT at that change of time as its a lighter morning, plus 28th-30th March will be GMT as the last Sunday when the clocks change is the 31st.

Schools across England and Wales vary to try and get split the tourism season, same again in February I believe. I think most schools in Wales, particularly the south, and West Midlands have had half term this week, whereas South West England was last week.

Scotland have a different academic year altogether.

Is it just me who thinks that rather than worrying about the week that the Jacobite isn't running , to have a season of mainline steam running 28th March -25th October at a time when steam in general is facing so many challenges, is a reason to be cheerful?

No need to worry about the ORR so long as you are doing what you said you were going to do.
Regards school holidays, my daughter is off this week (as per Wales) and we are having a week in Aviemore. We have found many of the Scottish attractions finished last weekend, but it does means the more touristy bits of Speyside are quieter which suits us!

It isn't the largest collection but the Elgin Car Museum worth dropping into and then nipping across the road to the garden centre across for a wander and some cake. Wouldn't trust outdoor activities at the rate we've had storms.
