Interesting... would the Tilbury tank be limited to 50mph on the mainline? How would that have fit in with existing paths?

Isn't/wasn't the rule that locos with driving wheels under 6' dia. are limited to 50m.p.h.? 2500's are 5' 9". I would have thought that water capacity would also be limiting factor.

60mph I think with 5' 9" drivers. 76079 with smaller wheels certainly was 60 mph. It's four tracked from York to Northallerton, and only about 14 miles from there to Darlington, so pathing shouldn't have been too much of an issue.

Would have thought that 50 miles would be well within its range but at 4MT it would have to be quite a short train ...Know very little about the class in service but it would be a happy accident for the LMS to get the draught right on a 3 cylinder...

I believe they performed very well for 30 years or so but it was realised that two cylinders could also do the job with less maintenance, the LTS was no easy job, albeit not too long. I remember reading that the 3 cylinder version could have the regulator pushed up to the roof when starting on a dry rail.

Re the water capacity, don't forget the NRM has a six-wheel milk tanker...

Wasn't it just. Alfie loved it, he discovered a fellow gricer who kept dog treats in his car!
So he spent most of the time sitting and giving a paw to him and his wife. :) It kept him quiet, ish, for two minutes.

You didn't take Maggie along then, or would the easy availability of an escape route have been too much of an temptation, my dog can sniff out a treat at 50 paces, and gives the poor victim the full armoury of her weapons, the paw, the pleading look, the big brown sad eyes, and if those don't work, the head tilt, no one can resist the German Shepard head tilt,

No, Maggie stays at home. She has been diagnosed with dementia, poor girl after the rotten life she's had living on the streets in Spain, spending over 5 years in a
dog pound before coming to the UK. I don't think she would attempt to escape again. That two weeks of freedom when she nearly starved to death on the
Lancashire/Yorkshire moors has taught her a lesson. She just has a short walk on a lead three times a day.

Flexed our members card for a day's riding with the visitors before they went back. Trouble with the heating on 70000's train, none !!
A selection of what I got on run rounds and stepping off at Rammy for a nosebag.

Saturday 20 April and we flexed the members card again for a ride behind 4079 before it leaves, and chance for a walk to keep the hip from seizing up! Latest fitments to 4079 can be seen on top of the boiler at Irwell Vale, two thundering big microphones making a mess of the shots, removed later in the proceedings. Picnic at Rammy courtesy of the chippy! :D P1170633.JPG P1170636.JPG P1170638.JPG P1170640.JPG P1170644.JPG

So we are visiting the East Lancs on the first Saturday in July (maybe its the first Sunday, havent decided yet).
Whats the best things to do to see the railway? We could just travel up and down a couple of times, but I am not sure that allows enthusiasts like us to fully get to grips with the railway. We will also have the car so can drive a bit if needed.
Whats the best plan for a day out on the railway to fully appreciate it?

No to both? Choose a different railway.

Not a helpful reply. I may not support some of the actions of the managing team, but I do support the railway and the many volunteers who have built it.

You don't want to support railway heritage and disrespect the people who reopened the railway.
