I'm not criticizing your opinion, I just want to offer my own. I tend to think that if a person has paid out all that money to fix a loco, especially one that suffered damage like Blue Peter did, he's entitled to paint it whatever colour he feels like! Again, just my opinion.

Indeed he is but they also have a duty to history. It’s wrong but presumably the choice was made as to most people it would otherwise just look like Tornado with smaller wheels

Your whole post sums up exactly my thoughts as well. I know it's Hosking's right to have it painted whatever colour he likes but Blue Peter is an engine where I think, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right.

Duty to History John? Bahamas ran round in steam days with a MK2 brake in a slightly off shade of Maroon did it?

Ultimately he’s at least painted it in a colour it could feasibly have carried had BR wanted. And with the second tender going BR Blue it makes sense as it will match both Gresley and BP

I have been reminded by a friend and colleague of my penchant for 4472 with the double tender and LNER apple green, despite a multitude of "sins" (his word, not mine!) physically in terms of the components carried.

I'm sure they will look the part, but for me Blue Peter is one of those locomotives that really does look the business in an authentic livery.

It’s about locomotives not coaches and it’s faded maroon, due to be repainted, that’s if there will be a need for a support coach in 2024. I said I can understand why they have done it. There were two versions of BR blue, I’m not sure the second tender matches the shade of SNG, we won’t know until they are coupled together

Or the very shiny finish and polished tyres?

For such an admired and well respected loco, it seems odd to me that 60532 has spent most of its life in preservation in the wrong liveries!

Tbf it had such a short working life with BR, there’s more history in those “wrong” liveries than there is in the ones it carried in service.

From what I’m told same batch of blue has been used on SNG, BP and for the tender. So I would hope they match!

Which colour is Tornado coming out in this time? If that is either LNER or BR green, then blue for Blue Peter will make it much easier to tell them apart. Yes, I know the experts on here can see the differences, but apart from the nameplates the differences (even the wheel size) could be too subtle for Joe Schmoe.

I suppose it depends where you draw the line. When it was withdrawn from BR service it became a museum piece. Most owners go to some lengths to preserve the original loco visually by hiding air braking equipment out of sight and giving them an accurate livery etc. It would probably have been easier to convert Clan Line to air braking but the decision was taken to make all the modifications reversible should it have to retire to a heritage line. Blue Peter is a difficult one as it needs to be distinguishable from Tornado, BR Green would then be the accurate choice. Logically the new P2 should have an A4 type front but then the uninitiated would think it was just another A4.

I believe Tornado will be in apple green in one form or another.

I’m all for BR Green and Sky Blue backed plates, however I’m just going to be happy to my favourite LNER Pacific back in action, it’s going to be nice to see it finally make an appearance at the SVR (which it could have done way back in 1997 if not for a senior member of NELPG saying ‘No’)
As I’ve said before I do have a massive thing for 60532.

I share your view, including of it's relative unimportance compared to being back in steam.

I remember, way back when, being very excited that Express Blue was being used. It caught something about the history of steam, and was benign even if strictly inaccurate in some applications. My frustration is that it is now becoming a de facto standard despite only being used for a short period on a small number of locomotives.

I realise that paint creates a lot of debate and as I'm not paying for that paint and don't own the subject being painted, I've felt that my opinion probably isn't worth very much. However........

Heritage needs to mean something - doesn't it? What are we preserving if not part of our history and heritage?

If I owned a listed building, I probably wouldn't be allowed to paint it Green or Blue. The old 1950's car I once owned, I felt needed to be restored to as it was - without big wheels, go-faster stripes in Green or Blue and fluffy dice in the cab ;-) I could have done that but it would never have sat well with me just as it wouldn't have felt right to name it 'Hogwarts Ford' or the like - but hey ho, just my opinion you understand.

On the plus side - I do look forward to 'Green Peter' appearing at the SVR ;-)

On the point that seems to be being made that “painting 60532 blue will help distinguish it from Tornado” - is that actually much of a problem? I don’t seem to hear much clamour that 34046 needs a distinct livery so that it doesn’t get mistaken for 35028 …

I think for those that care, “Blue Peter” will have an image that is perfectly distinct; and for those that don’t -“ooh, shiny”. Colour is irrelevant.

Paint it prototypically and be damned …

    Tom
