If I may be so bold - the fact No.60103 will remain mainline should be of great joy to us all.

Now, who’s going to be the first to lobby for a fresh repaint into apple green…!

Have you seen the green signal podcast in tribute to the late Peter Townend? It’s well worth it for what Steve Davies said about the conversation they had. :)

Only if it was going back to single chimney, and that'd be daft as it's at its best with a double.

I'm sure there was some discussion about this previously and it had been suggested (possibly by Jos Koopmans?) that the single chimney could be made to perform as efficiently as the current double chimney set up.

Its certainly something I'd like to see one day- FS arguably had most of its most famous and recognisable moments in its life whilst in Apple Green and it would be nice to see that guide return at some point.

Personally I'd love to see her back in single chimney form in lner green. But I doubt il ever be in a position to fund it, so il enjoy her as is.

I am suprised this hasn't already been tendered, I thought the radio silence was down to the new one being evaluated! There is nothing legally wrong with advertising a tender whilst the current one is still ongoing, seems they just hadn't got round to it! It doesn't make a lot of financial sense to have an in ticket locomotive sat idle for 6 months, but no doubt it will be a big draw to the NRM & perhaps they will curate some events around it.

There's enough of a livery debate about Blue Peter on the SVR thread, so no thanks! Can tell its January on Nat Pres with few trains running... ;)
I will agree though it is good to see a commitment to the loco remaining in steam and on the mainline where it belongs.

Few trains running yet 60103's engine and support coach move from Shildon to York yesterday hasn't been reported on here yet!

If it's anything like the local government procurements that I get involved with then the seemingly endless lengthening timescales might have caught them by surprise, especially as something like this tender hasn't been attempted since pre-COVID.

    Regards,

    Dan

I think it’s had enough money poured into it, as a tribute to Peter Townend let’s leave it as it is.

I don't know if Mr Riley wants it again or not..............but he had done a VERY decent job looking after it so far. To me it seems sense , if he wants it, to award him the job.
Oh, and there's only one livery;), address all paint enquiries to a Mr Porterbrook.:Joyful:

Technically what ever type of chimney you have a doubling of hight gives you an extra 15% of draught. This is effectively what having a double chimney does. So any revision to single would result in a poorer steaming locomotive.

Plus there is no casting, to be used, so any new single chimney would have to be cast, machined, and a new blast pipe, if you're going to that expense, it would make sense to look at modifying the drafting to make it more efficient, and to offset the problems caused by the single over double chimney arrangement.

I cannot understand any one who would want to make anything less efficient just because. Yes you could put a derivative of a lempor in as a single chimney but it would still be not as good as a double, even a double kylchap or lempor.

Yet how quickly we have forgot that a single chimney A3 Pacific produced a non-stop run in 1968…

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p011vfqw/4472-flying-scotsman

The single chimney A3 Pacific is still no slouch, gents.

The reason for wanting a single chimney restored is blindingly obvious: we want a return to a form that the nation (actually, the world) recognises, and is Scotsman’s most important livery, historically, in which she has achieved virtually all of her well known records and achievements.

It’s not just about efficiency, it’s about the history.

For my money, Flying Scotsman’s stint in BR dark green has been fabulous. But it’s time for a change.

On the contrary John, Peter wanted to see these locomotives in steam and being seen by people. Regardless of the livery and form, Scotsman needs to keep going.

And with respect, the money going into Scotsman is not so important as the money made out of it. If it turns a profit and can run itself and perhaps give the museum money besides - then undoubtedly it makes its own business case.

Not quite right, the reason it’s a household name and was originally preserved was it 100 mph record. Back then it was a RHD A1. The NRM has spent a fortune on its last overhaul, there can be no case for spending even more to detune it. It says a lot about the A3s that BR spent money on their further development in the final years of steam operation
