I always appreciated Scotsman in the apple green livery as seen in my photo of her at Churston, (minus the second tender).

John, you take the deflectors off, fit a single chimney, and repaint. It’s really not that involved.

Scotsman was overhauled at Doncaster in 1964 after Pegler purchased it and that’s literally all they did.

    upload_2024-1-20_22-43-45.jpeg

The “we haven’t got a single chimney” nonsense needs to stop too because we have drawings, dimensions, and that didn’t stop the A1 Trust with Tornado for its many parts, did it…!

Which is more than can be said for any student of Great Northern Railway practice after Thompson ordered the destruction of many older drawings - some only surviving because some employees hid them.

In your opinion. I challenge that out shopping it in LNER apple green after it’s been two decades since it was last seen in it would be a huge draw. Watch the crowds come and watch the merchandise sell out.

Playing devil's advocate here Simon, but it seems to draw huge crowds and sell all the related tat well enough as it is. There may be many valid arguements for reverting it to its "Pegler look" but its appeal to the public is not one of them I'm afraid. It seems to be the name, not the look, that sells the loco.

I wouldn't disagree with that. I would say it is more recognisable in its LNER guise - virtually every book, magazine and model sold of it is as 4472 not 60103.

I have probably dragged out the livery debate again for longer than needed so I will retire to go do what I should have been doing - volunteering...!

My own personal feeling is that it should go into LNER Green at its next repaint, with single chimney, minus smoke deflectors, But in order to do that, a new chimney will need to be cast, the old one i believe was scrapped because it was beyond further use, and a new blastpipe fabricated, all of which is certainly do able, if the NRM were to launch an appeal to fund it, along with the repaint, then people can then vote with their wallets, if enough want it, and are prepared to fund it, it will happen, it's down to the NRM, They, and only they, have the say to decide it.

    BUT .....

It was only rebuilt into its A3 guise in 1947 so to bring it back to pre war condition that means new cylinders and valve gear and reducing the BP to 180psi

The answer is to alternate, at each overhaul, between single-chim/LNER and double-chin/BR identities.

The PR opportunities are obvious, and the cost of a single chimney casting is not an issue - I’ll pay, as I always do.

The history of the loco’s achievements in the preservation era suggests any loss of capability, in single-chim format, may not be such a big issue as some seem to think.

Nice try :) but that’s a straw man argument - not a single person has advocated doing that.

Nor does anyone think Flying Scotsman, in either chimney format, will ever again be ‘truely authentic’ to any particular year in its pre-preservation history. That’s not what Alan Pegler wanted when he preserved it, nor what the NRM said when they bought it or since.

There’s a bit more to it than that, conversion to RHD and change the steam regulator steam collector to get rid of the banjo dome. Suffice to say it won’t happen.

Don’t be such a pedant John. She was never in “proper” 1920/1930 condition when Alan Pegler et al ran her in Apple Green, but that didn’t stop the masses coming out to swoon over her.

It’s a streamlined dome, John. The banjo dome was a different fitting.

I know but at least it was representative of a typical A3. I was answering a point about taking it back to 1930s condition that would need a lot more than just reducing the boiler pressure.
