That's correct, the centre axles were always geared together as well as originally being linked with rods. As the suspension moved it caused the rods and the gears to work against eachother.

Wasn’t there also a Clayton prototype in the 60’s that worked on similar principles ? AFAIK it never really worked on the main line though

Indeed there was - DHP1. KR Models make a model of it too.

There is a fascinating biography of Colonel Fell, written by his son John Fell, at:
    https://www.paxmanhistory.org.uk/fell/index.htm
This includes an informative account of the development of locomotive 10100 and its Clayton successor and the rationale behind their designs.
Fell's life story is full of interest: from training as a locomotive engineer in Doncaster to development and maintenance of aero-engines in WWI and his role at Rolls Royce, including develop the Merlin engine. He comes out of the story as one of the 20th century's 'unsung heroes' and clearly no fool.

If they get everything built, they could form their own TOC. :D

A harsh, but fair assessment similar to my conclusions after I read the website. I'll stick with funding the IDRS, ta.

Websites and organisations such as theirs are actually harmful in my opinion to the overall preservation cause. Ambition is healthy enough... but their plans are simply ludicrous, especially against the context that so far they haven't restored so much as a platform bench!

To be fair, it's accurately described - it's all still to do...

Of great note, one of the engines was kept and sectioned as a demonstrator at Derby Diesel School.
I think it may now be at the Anson Diesel Museum- sure if you visit they can tell you where it came from.
The Science Musem was going to take the transmission, but decided it lacked the space.
Apparently modern large excavators have similar gearbox design.

Ah yes, the bloke who was going to build a J39 with a copper boiler, IIRC?

One is scared to even ponder what the diesel equivalent might be...

Have you heard of the Crosley motor cars where the engines would appear to be tin cans welded together to form the cylinder block?

Wow. Very interesting - what a combination of materials; trying to use appropriate ones for the different applications. I wonder, though, if it would have suffered badly from dissimilar metal corrosion?

I know - I was amazed when I learned this. I only knew of Crosley's manufacturing of radios in the US pre-war. Then there was the episode of The Grand Tour on YouTube where James May bought a Crosley car.

Is someone planning to newly build that then?
I mean, it would certainly pull the crowds but could pull the coach sets?
