No Mallets in traffic at the moment Fred and as they haven’t the haulage capacity of the big 2-10-2T, they tend to appear only on a Sonderzug.

Which contradicts what the tour promoter was telling people last week, unless WCR have now miraculously repainted a set into blue and grey?

FWIW I don't have a dog in the fight, but the fact that it now appears that WCR have had a rake of CDL fitted mark 2's up their sleeves all along makes much of this thread and the other one superfluous!

Are you not mixing up this RTC trip with what Pathfinder said about their trip?

My take is that WCR are covered until the Jacobite starts. The interesting questions now are the status of the Northern Belle set and what happens after the Mk2s depart for Fort William.

Interestingly, this week's Railway Herald has an update on the stock expected to be used for the upcoming tours operated by West Coast and it does not quite align with what has been said here. Railway Herald appears to be saying Riviera have two sets of Mk2 CDL stock and it is a combination of these which will be used for the upcoming RTC jobs.

To be honest, I bet this whole sad situation isn't providing West Coast with any laughs.

So on that basis if WCR also have their own set there are potentially 3 sets that can be called upon, which would possibly suffice until things get sorted? In worst case scenario are mk2's cleared for the Jacobite line?

Riviera do have enough coaches to form two rakes of stock though there are at least two weekends that immediately spring to mind where both sets could be in use (9th March and 4th May with BLS and Pathfinder)

Mk2's are currently used for the afternoon Jacobite services. Only issue would be if No. 62005 is used, as implied by NELPG, during the latter half of the season. Lack of air brakes on the K1, unless this is being added during the current overhaul (but have not heard anything to suggest so).

TrueMatt, but then the same could be said for Belmond, SRPS, Riviera (who decided to sell them instead) Vintage and maybe others.
Maybe the JR should have been asked for earlier but I suspect that would just have moved the current situation forward as it seems the ORR went "all Trump" and said if you lose we revoke the exemption or whatever it is called this week.
LSL probably chose to do it as part of the refurbishment or maybe they were told no TOC licence unless you do, who knows.

However, if it comes down to operating the train with Steam or Not operating it just because the K1 has the wrong brakes, I doubt WCR will have much difficulty deciding. Unfortunately that is the K1s loss for not having dual braking. Harsh, but reality

Are those not early Mk2,s with toplights? Certainly the clip at the start of this seems to show that.
    https://steamingaroundyorkshire.co.uk/28th-september-2023/
So does that just not make them a more modern Mk1 as far as CDL is concerned as I assume they are not currently fitted with it?

I think the reference to MK2s in this comment is more based around their use in Scotland, on the Jacobite, not their door fittings. Which answers an earlier Q or whether MK2s can go up there
