I think a couple of ours may have been, but I am pretty certain that 30065 has... or will have, when it comes out of this latest overhaul. Hasn't run in the 2020's yet...

The trouble is Steve, I dont think there was a year zero. Did the Roman callander that we use today not go from BC1 to AD1? So either the first century AD was only 99 years long or @Spinner has a point.

And how come this is deemed to be the 21st centuary and not the 20th? It is after all 2024 and not 2124 this year. Discuss........

The BC/AD year numbering system was not invented until 525 AD - by the monk Dionysius Exiguus - and took some centuries after that to become firmly established in the Christian World. DE set Christ's birth date as Year 1, since the mathematical concept of "zero" had yet to become established in Europe.

Prior to that, the most common practice seems to have been to refer to years as within the reign of an Emperor, Roman Consul or local ruler (such as King Herod). Other options were to count from the supposed creation date of the World (as worked out from Genesis or wherever), the legendary creation date of Rome (753 BC) or a point established by Emperor Diocletian in 284 AD.

 

We are in the 21st century but the 2000s. We are in the third decade of the 21st century, running from 2021 to 2030, but the 2020s.

Thank you. So by the same token the third millenium runs from 2001 to 3000 inclusive, just as @Spinner said. And the year 2020 is part of the second decade of this century not the third, which is quite important in the context of the discussion here.

Myself and one of my school mates were very much of the opinion that we were the last class of students from the 20th century, we were rather happy to be millennium students, (we finished in 2000 btw) the year below us were the first ones who finished in the 21st century.

Can we get back to talking about trains btw? I’m really starting to go out of my tiny little mind.

Isle of Man Railway No.4 Loch has been in action during every decade since being built in 1874. It nearly missed the 1960's having been withdrawn in 1955 but was rebuilt with a new boiler and ran throughout the 1969 season. Operating through 16 decades must be something of a record.

Chaloner built in 1877 has (as far as we know) worked in every decade of its life since being built in 1877. Unlike the other surviving DeWinton's she was reboilered in 1926 and again twice is preservation.
Based in Leighton Buzzard, Chaloner is currently on 'holiday' in the Portmadoc area of North Wales.
