Not according to a steward friend who was on the train. The 86 was in the bay, after diesel swapped ends loco ran through to north of the station and back on the line past P6 and just stopped there unable to move forward.

Or RTC West Highland Steam Express 4 day trip back in 2010 (05/09/10)

Day 3 was Fort William to Glasgow Queen Street via Oban

Arrival was 493 mins late into Queen St at 03:10 having left Oban at the 2nd attempt 270 mins late

That was when Riley five couldn't get up the climb out of Oban so we ended up setting back and having to wait for 61994 to run light engine from Crianlarich with it gauging run for the line being that light engine move once the paperwork had been secured

And Marquess was hand sanded up Glen Douglas bank

Everyone with local knowledge said that the train was overloaded by a coach but the 'informed' view thought otherwise. And what a mess resulted. It wasn't down to the Riley 5 though.

Enthusiasts are sometimes very tolerant of screw ups.

What local knowledge is that then Alan? The load was five tons under the limit for a Black 5 back in the day. The driver was an ex- Eastfield man who had been driving in and out of Oban for over 35 years. Sure it was going to be a challenge but that is what the enthusiasts like. Was it any more of a risk than expecting the K4 to go unaided later on? Easy to criticise with hindsight but it was a perfectly reasonable operating decision to run the train as planned in my opinion.

I was only going by what two Oban folk said separately to me on the day. The fact that the support coach was left at Crianlarich suggests to me that it was all a close call. I wouldn’t call it hindsight at all but you are right that it was an operational decision that turned out to be the wrong one given the experience of the folk involved.

Just a short observation without blame. It sounds as if there were many delays going on WCML in general. RTT does keep record of all the trains.

Top Marks for the smooth operation of Tangmere on Saturday.

Mike worryingly really compared to a lot of days Saturday looks pretty good day for the WCML up until the Preston points issue.
Usual short turn on an Avanti Scottish service I guess due to the southbound crew not being at Preston on time, a couple I suspect down to the Rest Day Working issue and for once it seemed few Northern or TPE cancellations.
Even the 197 minute late tour departure from Preston a long way short of some recent Avanti late running.

Probably unless the MK1 stock is ready or another air brake loco is available.

Isn't that one usually in the hands of one/pair of Mr Riley's Black 5s? Don't know if either 45212 or 45407 or both would be available.

On that point, as a short term measure are WCR's loco's through piped, could they use one of the Riley 5's and one of their own?

In the post Wotton Bassett world I'm not sure how well that would go down. *

More realistic might be using the 47 as train engine to "translate" vac to air.

    (*Own opinion)

45212 is currently at Haworth, KWVR. Network Rail are currently undergoing planned maintance at Keighley Station which has meant the line is closed, so unlikely that 45212 will be leaving.
