Have a feeling my Dad could be in either of those photos, He did a tour over the S&C with 6229 around the same sort of time, not long after my elder brother was born. (August 81)
I’ll have a chat with him when he’s home.

Matt this was the occasion when unusually we couldn't get water at Garsdale due to frost damage. So after a brief photo-stop here we went forward to Ais Gill where a road tanker was waiting to water us. For me it was a particularly memorable outing as I rode on the loco from Hellifield to Ais Gill that day (20/2/82).

I’ll mention it to my Dad when he’s back from my brothers Peter, there are slides (remember those?) knocking around somewhere, I’ll try and dig them out sometime and check the dates. What’s the thing about 6 degrees of separation? :)

Ha. That’s Bill Allan who maintained the water supply at Garsdale. When Garsdale ceased to be a water stop he moved to look after the Appleby supply.

"You've run out of water and are stopped at Garsdale you say? Yes, we can help. Turn the engine off so it doesn't overheat and we'll come along to refill the radiator ... Sorry - you need how much water?"

The mandatory working at height training has had a low take up thus far, I see ...

In steam days it was almost encouraged, signalmen were often pleased to have someone to talk to, I’ve had cups of tea in the mess at Nine Elms and a request to walk down the track was usually met with a pan OK but watch your backs

The days when enthusiasts recognised and respected a privilege and were respected by staff for doing so. Had many happy experiences that H&S no longer tolerate due to safety concerns but no-one I recall suffered injury when given responsibility. How much the present generation has lost hence the oft-heard cry of "I was born too late !!"
