Aye, kids today, they don't know half of it.
My ancestors survived Roman invasion, vikings, plague, asbestos and nylon school shirts and it didn't do them any harm, I'm Ok and hasn't done me any harm - bloody youngsters, aye? :)

I do send my appreciation to those who provide me so much humour on a Sunday morning. Seahouse on the other hand - a fine sight indeed

The exhaust could be anywhere, it was usual to have 2 silencer boxes laid across the front, However we had a TS3 with just one box, THAT was noisy.

Note the Rootes supercharger stuck on the front.

I understand that single chimney cats have a much louder and more distinctive meow than those with a double chimney?

Getting back to the 5Xs..I think the 22A Bristol ones should deserve a mention including preserved 5690 Leander. In August 1957 I went on a shed bash to the North East ,I picket up a Bristol to Newcastle at Derby which rolled in behind 5690.I was expecting a engine change at York but no ,5690 went right thro to Newcastle ,good run that 300 miles or more. Must been have one of the longest booked turns in the country. 5Xs from 26A Newton Heath and 66APolmadie ,working the Manchester to Glasgow' s was also a long hard run .In April 1955 I caught the 9.35 am (Suns)Manchester to Glasgow from Carlisle ,5706 Express (26A)was in charge. That was about a 225 mile run with 13 on and both Shap and Beatock to climb. Banker on Beatock was 2-6-4T 2130. Photo attached 2130 Beatock.

My one and only northbound run over Beattock behind steam was with 45627 'Sierra Leone' (the real one!) in September 1964.

I used to chat with a retired Newton Heath driver John Sheridan and he said there was often no coal left at the end of the Manchester - Glasgow run.

A pal of mine was a fireman at Newton Heath and said much the same thing. Several of 26A's Jubilees were attached to the Fowler 3500g. tender rather the 4000g Stanier type and so had a much smaller coal capacity - 5 1/2 tons against 9 tons IIRC.

Still on 5Xs, was any attempt at saving 45562 Alberta made? I know it was one of the last ones in traffic and was presumably a good one

It was in use with Kolhapur on the last day of steam at Leeds on 30th September 1967. It's my recollection that Alberta was earmarked for preservation right to the end, but there was a problem with its wheels that made the purchaser plump for 45593 instead.

EDIT. I've just noticed, for the first time in 56 years, since I took that photo, that 45593 is in the background of the Alberta shot, under the coaling stage on the left.

45562 was taken to Tyseley after withdrawal, whereupon certain parts were removed for 45593. After removal of said parts, 45562 went on to Cashmore's, Great Bridge for scrapping.
