Has the SR bought this loco then?
    Who is funding the overhaul?

No, the Strathspey hasn't purchased the loco, the other details are private between the owner and the railway.

Believe it's a similar arrangement to the class 37 that arrived a couple of years ago.

Agree it looks at home there and would be a nice loco to see at Grantown too, let's hope both things happen in the not too distant future.

Fair enough. Is it safe to say we are going to see a full overhaul of the 9F?

Is there any more of the loco than appears in the pictures, such as valve gear? I gather it was heavily plundered whilst at Barry so maybe not.

Was this originally saved from Barry as a source of spares for 92214?

Yes, I am told that there is a large number of parts available, including the valves.

Decent sized article in the latest Steam Railway on 92219's long road to Scotland and the work ahead. The Aviemore shed team don't sound too phased by the challenge ahead even with a few bits of various sizes. A sensible plan is in place for a tender and most of the rest is fairly common work.

There are more Standard locos than tenders about...but new builds have I believe already been produced, Clan have also to build a new one ( BR1F) so there might be a few patterns in existance.

Yes, but surely there are more operational condition tenders than locomotives about. Why wouldn't an owning group like the idea of renting the tender out while the locomotive is in pieces? More money and less storage...

Come on @Jimc - they are BR Standards, they almost certainly aren’t interchangeable ;)

As @Jamessquared aluded to, options for standard tenders for loan that are compatible could be limited- particularly if a number of locos that are currently being worked on come back into traffic on similar timescales (which superficially at least seems relatively likely)?

And what happens when they come back in a condition that wasn’t as they left, such as in the past when a certain loco had to have a tender swap because after a visit elsewhere someone had left the handbrake on on its Tender?

A decent contract ought to cover such things.

I suppose by the time the loco is nearly ready maybe some suitable tenders currently in use might be looking for an engine in steam to attach to.

Had a quick shufty at the SR article and what struck me about the 'sensible' tender build plan was that a perfectly good replica tender would be the result, but not one that a VAB would pass for running on NR, which isnt a problem for a 9F.
Got me thinking that there are not any Standard 5's on the mainline at the moment no doubt because they arent as suited for Jacobite duties as Black 5's...

The limitation with a contract is your remedy in a very illiquid market.

If someone knackers your tender, you can claim for the repair costs, but you are still without a tender, and you can't just pick up another one. Yes you can claim for loss of profit, but if your engine is making a loss, what do you claim.

A lot of ideas about borrowing/hiring stuff falls down at this point, if you own a thing that is run for pleasure and is hard to replace, you take an "emotional"/inconvenience risk that you cannot back off.

Well that depends. How many out of ticket and in ticket large BR standards are there out there? If a locomotive is on display you wouldn't want to hire out the tender, and if its within months of running you probably wouldn't want to, but I wonder how many locomotives are under overhaul that won't be completed for some time? Anyone familiar enough with what's out there to do a headcount?

73050 is a few years off being ready, and its tender is behind 92134. 70013 and 92212 are the only other ones being overhauled that I can think off, the former far more advanced than the latter. Other than that, everything else I can think of is either in traffic or on display, or doesn't have a tender (75079).
