After the last day of steam in Leeds 5562 was retained for a Manchester Rail Travel Society special train which ran on 28th October 1967 after which the loco was withdrawn on the 4th November, being the last 'express passenger' locomotive on BR. (The Brit's were classified as 'mixed traffic'.) As is noted elsewhere, its wheel tyres were thin and was overlooked in the choice of loco for preservation for that reason.

Am I correct that most of those parts still exist on 45699? I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Pretty sure Tyseley had parts from 45697 Achilles as well.

I've posted these on Nat Pres before but no harm in doing it again.

Both being cannibalised for spares. I believe that Cashmores were not best pleased to receive locos with a fair few parts missing. Pat Whitehouse had friends in high places!

I think 5562 was the last remaining one of the old Holbeck stud left. 5593/5647/5697 were all west coast locos in good condition drafted in. So Alberta was the sentimental favourite at the end. But pragmatism ruled sentiment.

I think I've seen images of a "spare" Stanier 4000g tender parked at Tyseley when the GWR locos were stored there ahead of preservation but I can't find atm

Brian Oliver’s Galatea consortium was donated a piece of motion from Achilles that had been removed at Holbeck before it went to Tyseley.
Always interesting to look at the numbers stamped on motion.

Alberta's tender. 45593 had a 3500 gallon tender. This was swapped with Alberta's. If I remember correctly, the chassis of 45593's original tender was used to make a hybrid tender for Standard 5 73096.

That’s interesting. I was fairly certain that the ‘motion’ was still intact on 45697 when it arrived at Tyseley, as my photos show although the one of the rhs is not too clear. The only things that had been removed were the two connecting rods, necessary for its safe movement.

Here are two members of Brian's group with the donated parts, unfortunately you can't read the stamped numbers!

I should have added that these parts were not robbed, the chap who donated them to the Galatea group had the receipts.
