    could it be Braunton?

it could be one of the SDJR 7fs, I doubt it would be from the Bluebell railway as it is too expensive.

Could it be a standard 5? the only bulleid they could bring to the event that looks respectable and isn't too far away is 34016.

34016 would make some sense. Perhaps that's why the dummy was thrown out* of the pram over the publication of the movement times from the MHR?

Would 34105 be capable of being moved by rail? She's been out of ticket for 10+ years now and to my knowledge has had very little done to her except to prevent deterioration. For the avoidence of doubt, I'm not trying to stir anything with this post, I was actually impressed to see that Swanage was in very good nick at the Spring Gala last month, contrary to what I've read on here or in the comics (the same has to be said for 76017).

*This is meant as a joke, please take it as such!

I'm not sure it will be a another MHR loco because 35005 and 41312 were being prepared the other week for their move by rail to Eastleigh.

Yes, the local police used to use it for training exercises about 0100 on Saturday mornings looking for various "characters".

The "Wagon Works" as the Home Tavern is now known has lost its pub sign in the last few days. It was probably tactful to remove the sign, it portrayed 5224 a GWR 2-8-0T.

    Cheers, Neil

Oooh, I like surprises! If its not 34067 and its a big locomotive, then my money's on either 34046, possibly 34016 as a last-minute job from the Mid-Hants, or the big one in the news at the moment, 34059. Otherwise it could be a money-spinner for some of the unrestored/under overhaul Southern Locomotives out there... In which case the cab section from the sole-surviving Eastleigh 'Light Pacific', 34101 Hartland on the back of a van from the NYMR? The mind boggles!

Most of the deterioration on 34105 seemed superficial when I saw her in June 2007. I suppose the air-smoothed casing acts as a sacrificial layer that protects the boiler from most of the elements. But I doubt that she would be in attendance.

I doubt that 34059 will be going because I think I said Stowe was going to go but proved to costly. Also would the Bluebell sacrifice a locomotive for one weekend just as daily running has started and 9017 as far as I know has not returned from Llangollen yet but I'm not sure on that. 34046 does seem likely though.

I reckon, it will be 34016, Eastleighs old steam tester!

I will be there on the Saturday, in the real ale tent; getting steam up! :-$

I'm there too on Saturday, although I'm going there by train from Swansea via Didcot Railway Centre. Will probably spend 1 1/2 hours there (not enough time for a steamday, but I haven't been there before, so I can always go again when I can afford it!). Then at 12:22, its about 1 1/2 hours via Reading and Basingstoke to Eastleigh. Can't wait! \:D/

I've lost track of what has been confirmed and what is still guess-work. Have Clan Line and Oliver Cromwell been confirmed for Sun & Mon? Is the "mystery guest" in addition to these two?

Someone mentioned that the Duke Dog hasn't returned to the Bluebell yet. Could her low loaders be diverted via Eastleigh, perhaps? Or, if not 9017, are there any other locos due to be moving to summer residences in the south that could be diverted for the weekend? Whilst it doesn't make sense to send a loco by road just for the Eastleigh gala, it might be worth a modest change of plan and a small detour for one already loaded up?

I'm intending to be there on Monday. I'll have some of my DVDs with me, so "stop me and buy one" if you see me. Proceeds to MNLPS, MHRPS, ERPS and the gala's charities.

Possible allusion to the nearby former Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway, which had GWR locomotives running on it? Otherwise I haven't the foggiest. #-o

34081 hasn't been stripped down yet has it? Another possible candidate if a large steam loco were to be sourced.

None at all - except that she might, possibly, be moving by road at about the right time and so might, possibly, be diverted to the exhibition without costing the organisers a small fortune. I was thinking about "what's practicable at short notice?" rather than "what would I, ideally, like to see?"

Around 5 weeks ago I asked the question of the Battle of Britain Loco Society and while the loco was available, funds to cover its movement by road each way from Sheringham were not. We were looking at a bill of around £10k with VAT.

Had we got sponsorship towards the move, then it could have been possible, but when you are heavily involved in a charity fundraising event, you start to feel guilty if you need to spend money of this magnitude, knowing that the number of people through the gate might not cover the outlay. Then you question yourself what £10k extra would have provided for one of the supported charities.

The days of the "youve never had it so good" BR works days are long gone, and this event, like any other has to wash its face financially.

Dont forget too, that for every £10 we take on the gate, that nice Mr Darling :smt013 takes £1.30 in vat. The real story behind the event is yet to be told.

But for those that have booked advance tickets or plan to come over the weekend - thank you.

I feel privilege to be able to look around Eastleigh works for ten pounds. It's a great bargain for a day out.
Well done Knight rail & RM Mag
