I believe the idea comes from the 'town forum' - LYMINGTON FORUM'S 'HAREBRAINED' IDEAS REJECTED BY COUNCILLORS. Incidentally, the clipping comes from the 'Lymington River Association' website, a similarly harebrained organisation some might say on a mission to get rid of the ferry link to the Isle of Wight, and so its rail link, to enable expansion of the marina up the river...

Heard today that the 400's will only be running for another year... So what is to go in their places after the year is out?

I wouldnt bet on it 34007..only today I received an email; as follows

    Class 158 Test run

    Sunday 10th May

    5Z81 06+20 Southampton - Lymington Pier

    Southampton 06.20
    Brockenhurst Plat 3 06.33 06.34
    Lymington Town 06.41 06.47
    Lymington Pier 06.49

    Stepping Height measurements.

    ---------------------------------------------

    5Z82 06+55 Lymington Pier - Brockenhurst

    Lymington Pier 06.55
    Lymington Town 06.57 06.58
    Brockenhurst Plat 4 07.11

    Timing Trip

    ---------------------------------------------

    5Z83 07+18 Brockenhurst - Lymington Pier

    Brockenhurst Plat 4 07.18
    Lymington Town 07.23 07.24
    Lymington Pier 07.26

    Timing Trip

    ------------------------------------------------

    5Z84 07+36 Lymington Pier - Southampton

    Lymington Pier 07.36
    Lymington Town 07.38 07.39
    Brockenhurst Plat 2 07.52 07.53
    Southampton 08.07

At Lymington Pier - Class 158/159 units must stop
30m from stop blocks (yellow marked fence post)

So I would give the 400s only a few more months

You say a few more months, but surely this will be down to driver training on the branch? So what are happening to the ones already on the line? Do they have another home?

We will have to see about training. Bournemouth Men are not 158/9 trained.. Salisbury and Fratton Depots are. So it will either be, the latter learning Lymington, or Bomo Men learning 158s

Andy you really should read these threads before you start posting.

    Lymington Branch changes ?

An extract fromthe Wessex Rail Gen group.

" Have been advised that there is to be a trial on 19th April with a DMU
Class 158. The plan apparently is to use a Class 158 during the week with
a Class 450 at weekends, presumably from the new timetable in December."

Not really surprising given that two SWT 158 units will come back from loan to East Midlands Trains within a few months . Anything to reduce costs .... and Stagecoach are in business to make money, not provide us with a hobby!

I'll try to find out more in the next few days.

    Cheers, Neil

As it is down to cost, is it cheaper to add Totton-Lymington route knowledge to Salisbury drivers - or add 158 traction to Bournemouth drivers? Presumably, too, if some units were BOMO based they would have to provide 158 servicing/fuelling training to the depot staff as well.

Will be interesting to see what develops.

The cheapest option would be for Fratton crews to learn Brockenhurst - Lymington, just one days learning. Fratton would also be able to take the 158s to Bournemouth when engineering work prevents them returning to Southampton.

David, Thanks for the reply. ](*,) ](*,) But I guess we will have to wait and see what happens on this one.. and the major question is what is going to happen to the units currently running on the line?

I guess there's a chance they could end up at Eastleigh with 1881, suppose we'll just have to wait and see. I'd be suprised if they were scrapped as they are in a fair condition inside and at the very least some of the new-generation line's might be interested.

34007, is absolutely correct.. The motors on 1497, do keep cutting out; as I personally experienced on Wednesday. There is a notice in the Drivers cab to that affect.

In reply to other poster, which ever way SWT go, whether Bomo/Sals men, then a Conductor for Route Knowledge/or Traction Knowledge can be provided, until all Drivers have been trained!

One question that comes to mind. What was the point in upgrading the 3rd rail on the branch just to use 450s at weekends? Surely 158s could be strengthen to cover the extra capacity needed for the weekend traffic or doesn’t SWT have enough units at weekends to cover the possible extra demand that the branch may require at weekends.

Providing the Unit doesnt worsen just yet, no problem. Back in the Slam Door days, where ive experienced these probs, they can go on for alot morwe miles.

But they do have to be driven with respect.. Such as notching up gradually.

I wish all driver's had done the same as you. I've had to rewire a lot of linebreaker cases where they hadn't.

Surely the unit will still cut-out? So maybe the motor should need to be re-wound or an alternative bogie?

It depends on the reason why it's overloading. If it was due to a defective traction motor, the fault would have been found and fixed by now as it would have been pretty obvious. It is most likely a control fault probably with the CLR (not always the easiest of faults to diagnose). Notching up gradually under this particular fault condition will indeed prevent the unit from overloading as twofnine says.
