The rear two thirds of the frames and that’s about it. Marchington kept the original name plates.
No engine remains 100% original after its first overhaul. Looking around Clan Line much of the motion is stamped with other loco’s numbers, as one of the last batch it was built with a fabricated rear pony truck but it has a cast one from the earlier series and it’s on its fourth boiler.

I think @torgormaig put a photo up once showing the brass cab spectacle surrounds were original :)

To be honest every steam loco is now well past it's sell by date! Age is not an indicator of condition or reliability. How well it's been looked after and the thoroughness of its last overhaul would be far better indicators of reliability. On this basis Flying Scotsman would be a pretty safe bet as it had a huge rebuild 10 years ago and has been looked after by a top team of engineers. Plus, the locomotive is probably one of the best documented out there, should not be any hidden unknowns.

I agree but any steam locomotive can bite you when least expected, think of one of the most reliable locos on the mainline being taken out with cracked thermic syphons.

Absolutely, totally agree. You can never predict with much certainty in the world of steam locos - or any vintage machinery for that matter. Indeed Flying Scotsman's own reputation for making very rich owners, a lot less rich, is evidence to that.
However, the loco is in as good a condition now than it probably has ever been in its last 100 years.

Not wanting to start the livery debate again but an interesting comment on the Tender document according to rail advent
' It is expected that the contract will start on the 3rd June 2024 and does include the provision for the locomotive to be converted to a single chimney locomotive and a livery change if requested.
... no mention of thermic syphons though

Ps if anyone wants to forge an NRM works order requesting this i can probably help....

Deja vu. This thread had pretty much the same conversation in 2017, when Rileys successfully tendered for the NRM contract at that time. I wish them success again, if they want it.

Probably because fitting them would be a fairly major design change for a Gresley Pacific …

To be pedantic - my understanding is that Southern Maid's present livery is the original livery applied to all RHDR locos (except the Canadian Pacifics) at the time of construction. It may have been a standard Davey, Paxman colour as River Esk was apparently also painted a "greyish green" in the 1920s.

I'd love to be wrong - I was just going off what was in the post by @huochemi, and the implied build and run aspects.

60103 to be out of the public eye between the 25th and 28th March as the NRM chooses its next custodian.

And when we see the white smoke coming out of the chimney we'll know they've chosen one?

Why would the process of choosing take the loco out of the public eye? Are they going to take the loco, and the prospective custodians, off to a country retreat beyond any phone signal until a candidate is chosen, with the deliberations later screened in hour-long episodes on BBC1 and the winner exclusively revealed by Claudia Winkleman in the final episode?

At a guess, so the potential custodians and/or their representatives can verify its condition for themselves? Over a pit or similar, maybe. And without "Dad, that man just climbed on it, can I? Can I can I can I?"

The only green paint I found on Esk was on the sand boxes and that was a bright mid green. Never found any other specific colour although I believe it was a dark red at one early date.

Also confidentiality. I have a vague memory that in public tendering rules the prospective suppliers aren't supposed to know who their competitors are, so doing it all in private gives confidence no-one is eavesdropping.
