Do like sixty four forty one in red, really wish it had paid a visit to the SVR in the mid 90’s.
One Red ‘un, one black ‘un and a green ‘un would have made quite the sight :)

A wonderful set of photographs, the landscape view of the fells, a couple drinking in the view (with attendant dog) is especially sublime..............

Hoping we see the Ivatt getting used more than the Fairburn tanks

You did better than I did on my visit last Friday morning (17/5/24) with the drizzle was just setting in, as seen here IMG_1661a copy.jpg

When I first saw this engine in preservation store at Carnforth in August '68 it was the intention back then that it would operate here. Now, 56 years later, it has finally made it and she makes a fine sight even on a dull misty Lakeland morning.

C10EFAB6-D948-40B5-8DD8-D87516479002.jpeg 46441 must be an ideal locomotive for the line and it’s nice to see a BR engine in operation there.

Out of curiosity, if the intention was originally for her to operate at Haverthwaite, why has it taken more than half a century for this to happen?

I think it was the result of an uncoupling between Peter Beet and the Lakeside and Haverthwaite when he steered more towards making Steamtown Carnforth an attraction in its own right rather than a maintenance base for the L&HR.

So the original intention was for the preserved line to run from Lakeside to Carnforth?

I’m guessing the dual carriageway scuppered the plans.

Precisely it. AIUI the Ivatt was due to move to the L&HR by rail but the roadway scuppered that and, at the time, road movement wasn't viable so it stayed at Carnforth.

No offence to the current day L&HR but it’s a shame the original plan didn’t happen, it could’ve been one of the country’s leading heritage railways.

have a photograph somewhere of 46441 in BR days running out of Haverthwaite , the reason for the separation from Carnforth was the building of the dual carriageway and the lose of the track bed between Haverthwaite and Plumpton Junction and the demolition of the viaduct and station at Greennodd

46441 is stored behind LT&S 'Thundersley' at Carnforth MPD. I have the date down as July 1967 some 3 months after 46441's withdrawal.

Twelve months later (3/8/68) it had been turned and repainted in maroon - behind it is 42073 4 6441 42073.jpg

The original plan was Lakeside to a new station at Plumpton Junction. This was scuppered by a road scheme which severed the line at Haverthwaite.

Supporters had begun to gather locos at Carnforth. They then divided into two companies, some moving to the truncated L&HR and others staying at Carnforth. For quite a few years the company which owned Steamtown was still named the ‘Lakeside Railway Estates Co.’
