    Nice to see a rake of milk tanks. I believe they were glass inside?
    It would be interesting to know who the whole milk delivery system worked and how it works today? I presume it used to be collected in churns from small farms, then into the tankers at a collection point. Taken to London and then back into churns or bottled.

    Phil,
    if I remember correctly it was, as you say, collected in churns from South Devon farms but then delivery was made to the large creamery (Daws later Unigate) at Totnes in a road tankers. After which it was loaded at the rail siding in six wheeled rail takers for onward transmission to London - I think the GWR place was at Kensington. There was another in North Devon, presumably SR. I expect this was replicated country wide. The rail siding is on the right.[​IMG]

    There were an interesting pair of articles in Backtrack last year(?) on the traffic.
