Interesting - there will be plenty of Southern Steam at Eastleigh over the Bank Holiday weekend, but on the Southern preserved lines, it looks like a bumper crop of GWR engines will be in action - 6695 will be presumably holding the fort with 80078 at Swanage, 9017 is rostered at the Bluebell, 7715 should be in action at the Spa Valley and now we have 5224 on the Mid Hants. Perhaps the K&ESR will join the party by rostering pannier 1638!

It's already been proof tested on the NYMR so you shouldn't be able to do it too much damage. A good strong loco but it does drink the water. Not recommended for wine 'n' dine trains, either, if you have a soup course!

Not a gentle starter then? Five coach trains on our 1-in-60 grades will seem like a holiday compared to the NYMR.

I wonder how long she'll stay? A month? IIRC, several of the regular locos have inspections, wash-outs, maintenance, etc. planned for the next few weeks, and 73096 has left a gap in the roster. Having come all that way, she might as well get some mileage in.

Nothing to do with the starting, more to do with the fore and aft motion imparted into the coaches when it's working.

"Fore and aft" from a Great Western engine - surely not.

Sounds just like a big industrial to me. You can't call yourself a proper railway waiter or buffet steward until you can serve soup or coffee with an 0-4-0 Barclay on the front. :smt048

Surely 92212 can't be that far off? Everything seems to be going back together now?

Calm down Darren please, he was only giving an opinion of which we are all entitled.

He was not being nasty in any way so what gives you the right to come back with a remark like that?.

    Just asking.

The 9F which has been due to return to traffic; which has been said is the latter part of this year - But with other locos and priorities this isnt always the case. I'm down there in June (12th I think) in the shed and I will have a close look then. But does she need need new cladding or is some of what she had going to be fitted/salvaged?

    Bittern is the reason why!
Everyone saying it'll be ready this month, no this month etc... Targets arent met and the railway looks bad, therefore the 9F will be ready when its ready.
Locos are very complicated pieces of kit and a minor snag can set a project back a long time. I'm not needing to calm down as my post wasn't in that nature. If you're going to pick up on any points I make, at least make sure they're valid in future. People thinking are exactly that!

But thats their opinion Darren, everyone is entitled to one. Just because it is different from yours you cone over all agressive to others. You would not like and neither do other people.

You are a good lad but please try and think before you post.

I can see Darren's point and it is a valid point - 92212 will be ready when she is ready. I don't see any aggresiveness about - Just fact. But she is due to be finished the latter part of this year. The boiler work etc has certainly been extensive... But the MHR team always turn out a first class loco!!

    Cheers

I agree with Chris. Every complex or long running project needs a plan and a plan has an estimated completion date. If a plan subsequently slips the reasons and the impact will certainly be clear to those involved. Yes it is true that it is nobody's business outside the MHR loco and boiler department what the reasons are behind but it is definitely in the MHR's interests to be open and informative when it happens, and it should be the duty of all the departments to be informative and provide good PR to those who are in truth their friends. Defensive statements just create an impression of evasiveness and all that goes with it.
If there was any tetchiness around previous plans such as Bittern's restoration then perhaps part of the problem was not keeping interested parties fully informed, leading to false expectations of completion dates. "It's ready when it's ready" suggests a lack of project planning - which I know for a fact to be untrue and unfair on MHR's project managers.

does anyone know on any progress on the boiler of 31806 at chatham?

the locos frames are done and i dont expect sitting around is doing them any good. If the boiler isn't back by now then the chances of it returning to service this year are very slim.

The boiler overhaul seems to be taking a very long time seeing as it was expected to be back around christmas 2007. (check MHN 133 or 132 cant remeber which). If they ar hoping to get 5 years out of it before JB takes it away then they dont look as though they are going to get it.

It looks like the loco shortage at MHR is likely to continue. Why was 34007 hired in in 2007 when they already had nearly 5 locos in service whereas in 2008 and now in 2009 there are barely enough locos to cover service requirements.

Swanage keep more locos in service and their loco requirements are much much less.....
