Very evocative photos thanks for sharing, were they taken at Derrybrat? Was the source of the peat Area 1 at Blackwater?

I understand that there are at least 80,000 tons of peat at Croghan and Ballycon and the intention is to continue to supply Edenberry Power Station with that peat until 17 December. However in the current climate changes can be made at short notice and it seems there is a preference to burn biomass that has come 5000 miles from South America rather than the local peat from 5 miles away.

There remains a large stock at Derrymoylin that could feasibly be extracted by rail but in 2024 rail activity is likely to be limited to the Edenderry ash train, fuel trains and track lifting trains.

(Thread drift alert) If burning of peat is being phased out (quite appropriately) but there is a stock of peat that has already been extracted from the bogs, there are surely better uses that it could be put to.

From a green point of view I don't think it matters. As I understand it the CO2 is released when the bog is drained, i.e. before going into production.

Instead of burning it, it could go for horticultural use I suppose (is it suitable?), but wouldn't that involve greater transport distances? In any case that market may be saturated as I think Westland Horticulture are taking a lot of the stockpiled peat already.

I am guessing that it is probably off to the Old Hall Farm at Bouth or NBRES for restoration?

It's effectively a one man band and the gentleman concerned is not in the first flush of youth.
I would take a guess that it has probably run its last train (but would love to be proved wrong!).
